Altius is a character introduced in Shovel Knight Dig who first appeared as a cameo in Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon. He is Shield Knight's pet owl and trusted companion.

Appearance

Altius is an owl with pink-purple and sand blue feathers, with bright yellow eyes.

Personality

Altius appears aloof at first, finding secluded places to rest with no care in the world. When motivated, however, he shows his loyalty to his mistress and an acute sense at finding secrets, to the point of planning ahead for his companion's quest. Altius enjoys being pat, and is also quick to react to direct attacks when he is awakened, although not to surprise attacks from above.

Story

Pocket Dungeon

Altius makes a cameo in VS Mode. When examining something on the board, a pop up window with Altius looking at the player appears.

Dig

Altius can always been found on the Surface, perched on an arrow sign near the Well's mouth. He flies up with the arrow sign and points it in the direction of something new when it has been unlocked. He can be hit with the Shovel Drop and sent down the well, and will be following Shovel Knight in any subsequent runs. You can pet him by pressing up while he is perched on the arrow.

Trivia

• At some point during development, Altius was known as "Lifdis".
• As a joke, Nitrome posted an animation of Altius performing a Shun Goku Satsu-like move, the Raging Demon from Street Fighter, in retaliation against Shovel Knight for having been hit too much by him; this, however, does not happen in-game, and Altius will never attack Shovel Knight.
