Axolongls are minor enemies in Shovel Knight: King of Cards. They appear as purple and white axolotls with impossibly long bodies of various lengths that can twist and turn, as well as sporting short arms and legs. They are found in the first part of the Axolongl Alcove stage of the Troupple Pond.
Behavior and Tactics[]
Axolongls serve as interactive obstacles. They can twist at multiple junctures, and are able to bury through walls and water. They appear static, but move backwards after King Knight hits them with a Shoulder Bash. They move back forward in their initial position after some time has passed. In that way they can obstruct certain areas but also allow access to higher platforms.
Variants[]
Blue Axolongl[]
Blue Axolongls are blue turquoise variants of Axolongls appearing in both King of Cards and Shovel Knight Showdown. They are usually shorter their cousins and are always moving on predetermined paths. In King of Cards, hitting one of them with a Shoulder Bash freezes all of them on the screen momentarily, but does not change their course. They are found in the second part of the Axolongl Alcove stage and during Showdown matches in the Axolongl Cave.
Dark Axolongl[]
Dark Axolongls are cyan-colored variant of Axolongls. They behave the same way as Blue Axolongls, but have a short trail of 3 fireballs at the ends of their tails. They are able to bury through Lava.
Joustus Card[]
One of the Joustus cards in King of Cards is an Axolongl card which has two Count Arrows facing left and right.
Trivia[]
- Axolongls are named "Spline Worms" in the game files.
- Axolongls were first conceptualized for the original campaign.[1]
- Their name is a pun on the axolotl, a type of salamander.
- Purple Axolongls are extremely similar to the Piranha Creeper enemies from Super Mario 3D World, the only difference being that Purple Axolongls can be hit anywhere on their bodies.
