The Chromatic Caverns is one of the Dungeons in Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon, created by the Pocket Dungeon to reflect on Prism Knight.
Description[]
The Chromatic Caverns is a surface area[1] filled with colored crystals. Despite the overall mineral environment, some form of crystalline vegetation grows there: trees, bamboos, flowers and mushrooms displaying facet-like appearance and vivid translucent colors. The level's namesake implies it takes place within one of the shrine-like cave entrances depicted on its world map and shortcut icon, which is made up of a series of stone pillars capped with a reef-like roof.
In Pocket Dungeon[]
The Chromatic Caverns are the sixth level visited in a normal run of Pocket Dungeon. This level always spawns a Shrine Portal, making it a necessary venture to complete the true ending's requirements. Once the level has been visited naturally, a shortcut can be purchased for Percy's cannon for 14,000 Gems.
The level normally spawns large numbers of Beetos and the incredibly defensive Crabstals. Swarmbees also spawn in smaller numbers, but grow more powerful with each successive Swarmbee linked in a chain. Because Crabstals naturally slide to the bottom of the map, they may end up burying important units like the Shrine Portal or Chester's shop. In the Legendary Path, a hazard is added that causes the screen to rotate, changing the position of all units accordingly. In addition, the Mama Mollusk spawns as a mini-boss, which creates its own Mini Mollusk units that chain with itself. Blastshells spawn in the normal enemy pool as well.
The stage is intended to be the lair of Prism Knight, and she does appear as the stage's boss under conditions like Shovel Knight's Quandaries, but in a normal run she is actually part of a different quadrant of levels entirely. Instead, normally, the stage's boss is either Tinker Knight, Treasure Knight, Mole Knight, or Scrap Knight.
Trivia[]
- Despite their similarities, the Chromatic Caverns are distinct from the Crystal Core. The latter is located deep within the planet, while, the former are closer to the surface.[1]
