Costumes is feature exclusive to Custom Knight on Nintendo versions of Shovel of Hope. Costumes are the most significant cosmetic as they alter Custom Knight's appearance drastically, from his sprite to even his map overworld sprite and dialogue portrait. Technically, there are only two unlock-able costumes, as the Body Swap costume is already unlocked from the start due to the mode being introduce in the Specter of Torment update.

It is also possible to choose from 52 different palettes. Initially Custom Knight starts off with two palettes, the default blue and green of the Stalwart Plate, progressively earning a new palette every level gained in a fixed order.

Counting all palettes and costumes, Custom Knight can choose from 208 outfits to wear during the campaign.

All three costumes also make an appearance in Shovel Knight Showdown, although under different conditions; the Body Swap costume being unlocked from the start once again, the Fish Head Set being the ultimate reward for having unlocked all the other Feats, and the Baron Set being truly exclusive to the Nintendo versions, as it is only available by scanning the Shovel Knight amiibo/Gold Edition amiibo in the Showdown title screen.

Thanks to their own respective amiibo, Plague Knight, Specter Knight, and King Knight also receive one special costume for them to wear during their campaigns and in Showdown, with the difference that in order to wear them during their stories, Madam Meeber must be talked to, offering the costumes each time their fairy counterpart is summoned; since such convenient exchange is not present in Shovel of Hope, the direct use of Custom Knight is the only way through which Shovel Knight can equip his costumes in his own campaign.

Trivia[]

  • While wearing the Baron set or the Fish Head costumes, Custom Knight is forced to make a completely different pose while activating the revolving wall in Pridemoor Keep instead of just standing still. This does not happen when wearing the female costume.
