Artwork of Madam Meeber with the four fairy companions.
The Fairy Companions are small fairies which can be summoned by scanning their respective amiibo in Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove, Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon, and Shovel Knight Dig, as well as Cyber Shadow, a game published by Yacht Club Games.
The fairy companions do not appear in Shovel Knight Showdown, because every character can potentially transform into a fairy thanks to the effects of the Fairy Wand.
Description[]
The fairies are purely cosmetic and don't affect the gameplay whatsoever. They each resemble one of the playable characters of the four campaigns of Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove:
- The Fairy of Shovelry is summoned with the Shovel Knight amiibo
- The Fairy of Alchemy with the Plague Knight amiibo
- The Fairy of Torment with the Specter Knight amiibo
- The Fairy of Royalty with the King Knight amiibo
- and the Gilded Fairy of Shovelry (named for the first time in Dig) is summoned with the Golden Edition Shovel Knight amiibo
The fairies interact with the environment around them in various ways, while mimicking their non-fairy counterparts mannerisms and flying around characters with some sort of story-related connection to them; for example, the Fairy of Torment shows a visible dislike of Shield Knight, while the Fairy of Alchemy is lovestruck when around Mona.
Accessibility[]
Treasure Trove[]
In Treasure Trove, just scanning each amiibo once, is enough to forever enable Madam Meeber to summon the respective fairy in a given playthrough. The fairies summoned through each amiibo are available in all campaigns, though some of the environmental interactions of each fairy may be exclusive to a specific campaign; for example, the Fairy of Alchemy in particular can get stuck inside Mona's Dynamo Decanter while she's processing an Essence, the Fairy of Torment broods alongside Specter Knight on the Tower of Fate's edge, and so on.
With the Custom Knight's Special FX, the special effects that summons a small companion character, like a Fairy or an Invisishade, cannot co-exist at the same time with a Fairy companion, with the fairy disappearing if a character FX is chosen, but they will reappear as soon as the Special FX character is deselected.
Pocket Dungeon[]
Despite the fact that her Fairy companions appear, Madam Meeber herself does not in this title; instead the summoning feature can be accessed from the options menu at the title screen, resulting in the selected amiibo needing to be scanned each time a Fairy companion is to be summoned. All the fairy companions go unnamed in this title.
Their interactions are also much more limited than in the other titles, being limited to just cheering after a stage victory, or if the current playable knight is defeated.
Unlike with the previous games of Treasure Trove, in Pocket Dungeon the Gold Edition amiibo functionality is now not identical to the normal Shovel Knight amiibo, as it will summon a golden Shovel Knight-themed fairy, instead of the standard blue one.
Dig[]
Added in the Nintendo Switch Version of Dig on June 26, 2023 alongside the Fate and Fortune expansion, Madam Meeber and the Fairy Companions once again appear offering their services; found at the Surface, Madam Meeber is once again able to Scan one of the compatible amiibo, then Summon their corresponding Fairy companion, the same from both Treasure Trove and Pocket Dungeon, whenever wanted, or Dismiss said companion when unwanted. Once again, the Gold Edition amiibo functionality is not identical to the normal Shovel Knight amiibo, as it will summon a golden fairy instead of the standard blue one, now named the Gilded Fairy of Shovelry.
When summoning, a complete list of the possible Fairy Companions will appear, with a series of "?" hiding the name of any fairy whose compatible amiibo has yet to be scanned, as well as a description indicating which amiibo is required to scan to unlock said fairies; however, to see this list, first at least one Fairy Companion must be made available, otherwise Madam Meeber will protest.
Unlike Treasure Trove and Pocket Dungeon, in Dig leaving the save file does not de-summon the chosen Fairy companion, which will remain until dismissed or exchanged for another one.
Cyber Shadow[]
Scanning any of the Shovel Knight series amiibo in the Nintendo Switch version of Cyber Shadow will summon a cosmetic small robotic companion version of each corresponding amiibo's knight (the Gold Edition amiibo counts as a regular Shovel Knight amiibo). Additionally, the color palette of the protagonist, the ninja Shadow, will change to reflect the respective robotic fairy if he stands still for a few moments, donning the colors of Shovel Knight, Plague Knight, Specter Knight, or King Knight.
While these robotic companions can be directly summoned by just scanning the amiibo, they can also be accessed by speaking to the hidden "Mecha fairy", a mechanical counterpart of Madam Meeber.
