The Alchemeister is a Mini-Boss in Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove. He is an old bearded man clad in a purple and gold robe and a purple hat in normal form, and can temporarily transform into a large yeti-like beast with long fangs and claws by drinking potions. In that form, he only keeps his hat and golden scarf from his normal attire.
A monster with a similar appearance to The Alchemeister's beast form, known as a Frostmeister, is met in Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon. This mighty beast has also a similar cousin species, known as Frostbitester.
Story[]
Shovel of Hope[]
In the end of Shovel of Hope, he can be seen at the Explodatorium in Plague Knight's newly founded advanced potion class. Along with the Magicist, he performs potion mixing and starts to drink the result. Plague Knight disturbs the transformation with his staff, resulting in the Alchemeister transforming instead into a body double of the Magicist. Both students then bow to Plague Knight.
Plague of Shadows[]
In Plague of Shadows The Alchemeister was among Plague Knight's minions that briefly revolted against him, forcing his boss to put him back in his place during his visit of the facility. He also appears in the ending, among the chaos at the Explodatorium under the new direction of Percy.
Specter of Torment[]
In Specter of Torment, the Alchemeister appears as one of the patrons at Creech's juice bar in Tower of Fate after Plague Knight joins the Order of No Quarter.
King of Cards[]
In King of Cards, two Alchemeisters can be seen in the background conducting potions in the Tower of Joustus as a step in the creation of Joustus cards (however the fact that there are two of them in the stage was later confirmed to have been an oversight from the developers[1]).
As Plague Knight was yet to be recruited as a member of Order of No Quarter at that point in time, it is possible that the Alchemeister himself also had yet to be placed under his employment.
Behavior and Tactics[]
The Alchemeister possess 23 hit points and deals 2 damage points upon contact. He only drops treasures when defeated in normal form, but also a Chicken when defeated as a beast. Beating him is required to progress through the second half of the Explodatorium.
In his normal form, the Alchemeister throws variously colored vials that explode when they hit the ground and damage the player if they hit him. In Specter of Torment, since the ground is covered with flowing water, some of the vials may cause continuous explosions. In his beast form, he runs back and forth across the screen, increasing speed as he takes damage.
Joustus Card[]
One of the Joustus cards in King of Cards is an Alchemeister card which has 3 Bomb Arrows facing left, right, and up.
Trivia[]
- In the Tower of Joustus, the place where all Joustus's cards are created, two Alchemeisters are seen working in the background alongside other minions in the production of said cards. However, the fact that there are two of them in the stage was later revealed to be a mistake.[1]
- His apparent status as a relatively newly-recruited minion of Plague Knight (as King of Cards leads to believe) may explain his initial disloyalty towards Plague Knight as shown in Plague of Shadows, as well as his also initial lack of interaction with the rest of Team Plague.
- In Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon, the Alchemeister is used to represent a Level 8 CPU in VS Mode. He is only outranked by the golden scholar Beeto representing a Level 9 CPU.
