The Hedge Pupil is a minor character in Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove and an acolyte to Plague Knight. He is tasked with guarding the secret entrance to the Potionarium hidden within his childhood house at the Village's outskirts. He is part of the large Hedge Family,[1] seen all over The Valley.
Appearance[]
The Hedge Pupil appears as a humanoid hedgehog wearing glasses and a tainted lab coat. Compared to his brothers, he is the shortest one, possibly implying that he is the youngest of the siblings.
Story[]
Plague of Shadows[]
In Plague of Shadows, Hedge Pupil can be found by his house at the Village's entrance. He is waiting for a locksmith to arrive, which is scheduled for two weeks. Instead of waiting, Plague Knight opts to blow his house up, much to Hedge Pupil's distress.
He is seen again after the fall of the Tower of Fate as one of the people left in charge of the Explodatorium by Plague Knight, along with Percy and the Magicist.
Specter of Torment[]
During the ending of Specter of Torment, Specter Knight carries an unconscious Reize and deposits him at the doorstep of the hedgehog brothers' house. The door opens as Specter Knight leaves, with two silhouettes matching Hedge Farmer and Hedge Pupil, appearing behind.
King of Cards[]
In King of Cards, Hedge Pupil is found at the Backyard Lab, his childhood home, and asks King Knight to help him test a secret device King Knight had requested him to develop, the Rat Bombardier Heirloom. To pay for the cost of the materials used, Hedge Pupil sells it to him for 
2. He then asks King Knight to test the device in an improvised course across his house and the cave laying behind it. He warns King Knight not to use the Shoulder Bash, as the Rat Bombardier's motion sensors still had a few kinks that would spell disaster if stimulated the wrong way.
After clearing the course, King Knight invites Hedge Pupil on the Glidewing, to enjoy some rest after his hard work. Aboard the airship, Hedge Pupil is delighted to see that his brother, Ledge Farmer, is also present. King Knight can also play an optional game of Joustus against Hedge Pupil.
Hedge Pupil can be seen losing the key of his house in the ending of the campaign, while blowing up the Cavern of Joustus alongside Plague Knight and Mona, which down the line would lead to the destruction of the house.
Showdown[]
In Shovel Knight Showdown, illusory copies of Hedge Pupil can be seen, together with the rest of the Glidewing's crew, in both the Village - House of Joustus and the Flying Machine - Fleet Tour stages. While in the latter, the illusion of Hedge Pupil is harmless, in the former it may occasionally form with his fellow crewmates a stampede of people that damages anyone who does not escape in time.
Pocket Dungeon[]
In the Puzzler's Pack DLC for Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon, Hedge Pupil makes a small cameo appearance alongside the rest of his brothers; At the Hedge Farm, inside the Hedge Farmer's burrow that can be entered with Mole Knight's dig ability, there is photo hanging on the wall, depicting a group shot of himself, 'Edge Farmer, Hedge Farmer, Ledge Farmer, and Sledge Farmer, alongside their nephew Reize.
