There are shrines of some sort, all over Puzzle Knight's maps. Whaddya think's stashed in there?

— 'Tief', Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon

The Shrines are bird-like statues found inside the Pocket Dungeon, guarded by the Shrinemaster. Their left hand is extended, on which rests a Key Fragment. Once a Shrine has been visited, it appears worn out.

Pocket Dungeon[]

Shrines appear in The Lich Yard, Chromatic Caverns, Stranded Ship, and Flying Machine stages. They hold both a Key Fragment and other items such as Relics or Gems. Once their items have been taken, their pristine appearance is shed and it becomes much older and damaged.

The rewards of Shrines are always collected in the same order, regardless of the order in which Shrines are accessed in a normal or endless run. Once a 4th Shrine has been accessed in an endless run, no more can appear for the rest of it. The order of rewards are:

  1. A choice between 2 Relics
  2. A chain of 6 fully grown Growth Gems
  3. A choice between 2 Relics
  4. A choice between 2 Items

A worn out Shrine is also found in the Camp's Hangout area. The Shrines also appear during a Quandary run, and visiting all of them will mark the completion of the Quandary with a golden star instead of a silver one.

In Venture Endlessly, where the dungeon run is endless and loops after the supposed final boss, if the Shrines have already been all completed once in a previous loop, they will stop appearing from that loop going forward; as such, each loop will now always end with the Tower of Fate, and the Shrinemaster will not be needed to be defeated, nor he will appear at all.

Puzzler's Pack DLC[]

A bean-made-looking Shrine can be found in the Main Hall of Castle Quandary. It is crossing arms rather than extending one.

Trivia[]

  • Two sets of sprites for different-looking Shrines can be found in the files since the game's release. One resembles a Peacock Gent with a tall hat, holding out cards and picking out one. The other resembles a Wizzem with a crown on its hat. It is holding a bag, sticks its tongue out and raises a finger as if to deny something.
