Hats are special equippable run modifiers in Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon. They were introduced in the Puzzler's Pack DLC. The Paradox Pack DLC added 8 new Hats to the initial 92, and the Pals Pack DLC 10 more, for a total of 110 Hats. The Pals Pack also added the option of enabling hats unlocked in Adventure mode in VS. matches.

Description[]

Hats modify Adventure and Quandary runs of the Pocket Dungeon. They can affect (positively or negatively) foes, hazards, levels, items or the playable knights. Helms only serve to modify the appearance of the playable knights and have no gameplay purpose. They can be equipped for any dungeon run or Quandaries, being easily swapped between at the wardrobe available at Mr. Hat's shop once unlocked, and do not block any Feat or progression. Some are used by default in Quest Quandaries.

Furthermore, the effects of most Hats, with only a few special exceptions, are ignored during Mona's reflex test minigame, found back at the Camp.

During a run, after equipping 1 Hat, each additional Hat stacked on increases by 5% the odds of Mr. Hat showing up in a side-room for an optional boss battle, with a Relic as a reward if successfully beaten. While the stacked Hats are visible in the adventure hubs, a game option (turned off by default) hides them during runs. Mr. Hat has different comments for when the Hats are visible or not during his boss battle.

Hats are also used in Weekly Runs, regardless of whether they were unlocked in Adventure mode.

Unlocks[]

Of the 100 Hats available, 82 are unlocked by buying them for Gems 20,000 Gems each at Mr. Hat's Shop, which is unlocked after completing at least one Quandary. The remaining 18 Hats are unlocked by finishing the Trial of Offerings of each Knight. Once unlocked, hats can be equipped from the wardrobe in the shop.

The purchasable Hats cycle in Mr. Hat's Shop, with only 3 displayed together at most. Once the displayed hats are bought, Mr. Hat brings out more. The game favors displaying Hats that were recently played in either Quests or Trial of Offerings Quandaries. Buying all of these 76 Hats earns the Feat Hat Connoisseur, and requires a total of Gems 1,520,000 Gems.

Winning a dungeon run with a specific hat will make a little star appear in their square's upper-left corner; if all hats, with the exception for the costume helms, have been used to win runs, then a crown will appear on the wardrobe's head decoration, and a red and golden ribbon emblazoned with a top hat will appear to the left of the hat category names.

Chaos[]

Stacking Hats that increase difficulty also increase a Chaos meter, visible from the wardrobe while using it. While most rise it, some hats have no impact on the Chaos level, and some even lower it. Those which reduce difficulty also reduce Chaos level. Max Chaos is indicated by the bar turning pink and green and rotating, and is necessary for validating the Feat Hat Stacking Champion. It is possible to add more Chaos past that point, with the meter shacking more and more violently, and the bar eventually bursting through it.

The Chaos meter has 20 levels, and cannot go lower than 0. All Knights start at 2 without any Hat equipped. Above 20, the Chaos meter gradually shakes harder. It bursts open once at level 24 and beyond; after reaching a Chaos meter of 40 Mr. Hat himself will stop dressing up the playable knight and instead will appear at the bottom of the screen, visibly concerned and sweating profusely. How much a Hat impacts the Chaos meter is indicated in the list down below.
