“ | Look who was up here! My brother! We're reunited! | ” |
The Hedge family[1] is a large family composed by anthropomorphic hedgehogs that reside in the Valley. Each member has a different field of expertise, which they all take very seriously.
Family Members[]
- Hedge Farmer - A digging-enthusiast brother who is an expert farmer and gardener.
- Hedge Pupil - A scientific brother who is an amateur engineer and follower of Team Plague.
- 'Edge Farmer - A greaser brother that strives to be as cool and edgy as possible, who joined The Enchantress's army.
- Ledge Farmer - A somewhat cowardly brother who wishes to fly, hence he joined the crew of the airship Glidewing.
- Sledge Farmer - A stern, presumed-to-be brother who is an accomplished sculptor.
- Reize - The nephew (possibly adopted) of the brothers, a plucky young adventurer traveling the land.
Background[]
Despite their different interests from one another, each of the hedgehog brothers still deeply care for their fellow siblings, and they get along fairly well. From the Hedge Farmer, Reize has learned a strong moral code, as well a few hedgehog-based fighting techniques, such as his Hedgespin attack.
The family home of the Hedge family, otherwise known as a Backyard Lab while visited by King Knight, is located at the outer edges of the Village, and contains a secret underground shortcut that directly leads to the hidden entrance of the Potionarium. The house was blown up by Plague Knight, due to Hedge Pupil having lost its front door's key while detonating the Cavern of Joustus, but the house was successfully reconstructed nonetheless shortly after. It is by this doorstep that Specter Knight left the injured Reize during the credits of Specter of Torment.
All members of the Hedge family live and operate in the Valley, and, in a way or another, each one ends up interacting with one of the major protagonists in the events surrounding The Enchantress's rise and fall.
Story[]
Hedge Farmer[]
The Hedge Farmer briefly meets King Knight during his quest to become a Joustus champion in Shovel Knight: King of Cards. Later, he meets Shovel Knight during the events of Shovel of Hope in the Village. Having heard tales of the legendary knight, but unsure if the one before him is the real deal, he challenges him to excavate a nearby Dig Pile, becoming very impressed when the knight is able to do so with ease.
Like his (presumed) brother Sledge Farmer, Hedge Farmer ends up at some point temporarily trapped inside the Pocket Dungeon, where he establishes a small farm and a small burrow for himself; his efforts in growing a giant beanstalk open the way to a legendary castle in the sky.
Hedge Pupil[]
The Hedge Pupil provides King Knight with the Rat Bombardier, and joins him aboard of the Glidewing, where he reunites with his brother, Ledge Farmer. Later, the Hedge Pupil becomes a follower of Plague Knight after he, the master alchemist, and Mona all collaborate together in detonating the various Houses of Joustus, now useless due to the ban of the game under King Knight's orders. He continues to remain loyal to Plague Knight, even after the alchemist detonates the family house of the hedgehogs in a fit of impatience during Plague of Shadows.
'Edge Farmer[]
The 'Edge Farmer, always looking for ways to look cool and edgy, joined The Enchantress's army during its infancy, meeting Specter Knight at the Tower of Fate while he is on his quest in Specter of Torment to reunite eight knights to form the cornerstone of the army, the Order of No Quarter. 'Edge Farmer supports him by providing 150 whenever the undead knight proves his edginess to the hedgehog, by skating with the Rail Mail on the ground while in front of him, or by performing the Cold Shoulder.
Ledge Farmer[]
The Ledge Farmer, who had joined the Glidewing's crew in order to test his latest wingsuit prototype, meets both King Knight and his brother Hedge Pupil during his stay on the airship in King of Cards; due to his cowardly nature, Ledge Farmer needs a "push" from King Knight, whom he rewards with 400 for his services, even when they are more harmful than useful. Ledge Farmer later becomes entangled with the crew's attempt to stop The Enchantress's plans and its subsequent betrayal from King Knight, who chooses to forsake the crew in exchange for Pridemoor Kingdom's throne, resulting in him, his brother Hedge Pupil, and most of the crew, including captain Cooper, to suffer injuries.
Sledge Farmer[]
At some point during the events of Shovel of Hope and Plague of Shadows, in Pocket Dungeon, the Sledge Farmer, like his (presumed) brother Hedge Farmer, ends up trapped into the eponymous puzzle box. Setting up shop at the legendary Castle Quandary, the hedgehog sculptor decides to apply his craft by immortalizing with a statue each knight who is able to clear all of their respective Quandaries.
Reize[]
Reize, the nephew of Hedge Farmer, has his long share of adventures and near-death experiences while trying to achieve his dream of becoming a legendary hero, including being corrupted into a twisted version of himself, and being trapped inside a Magic Mirror in Showdown, eventually ending up forming a group of sorts with three other Wandering Travelers.
Trivia[]
- All members of this family, with the exception of Reize, have names that not only contain "edge" in some way, but that also describe their "profession" of choice. "Edge" is derived from "hedgehog".
- King Knight is the one character who interacts with the most hedgehog brothers, having spoken to Hedge Farmer, Hedge Pupil, and Ledge Farmer during King of Cards, and Sledge Farmer during Pocket Dungeon.
- On that note, 'Edge Farmer is the hedgehog brother who instead interacted with the least number of characters, having only spoken to Specter Knight.
- Despite having seemingly left his son Reize in their care, a fact that even his partner Donovan was aware of, it is currently unknown what kind of relationship Luan, Reize's biological father, had with the Hedge Farmer and the rest of the Hedge family.
- Currently, the Hedge family has made an appearance, in some shape or form, in every title of the Shovel Knight series, with the exception of Shovel Knight Dig.
