Knightmares are 10 special challenge runs in Shovel Knight Dig, introduced with Fate and Fortune.

Description[]

Knightmares modify runs of the Well, impacting everything from enemies to items or the stages themselves. These modifiers stack with each higher level, up to 10. They can be enabled by talking to Black Knight by the campsite on the Surface.

The first Knightmare is unlocked by completing the game once with any ending, with each subsequent Knightmare unlocked by completing the previous one. Completing it with the true path changes its icon on the select screen as well as the icon of all preceding Knightmares. Completing the first Knightmare unlocks the Memento Knightmare Depth Banner, which keeps track of the currently deepest Knightmare reached.

As a reward for defeating Black Knight during the last Knightmare challenge, the armor template for the Black Knight Suit, hidden near the entrance of the Well, was added in the early preview for the last DLC of Dig.[1]

Depth Title and description Details
1 Hunting for Scraps: "Dark forces have corrupted the food inside the well. Food will be harder to come by." Carrots are no longer dropped, Apples and Turkeys are replaced by Apple Cores and Chewed Chicken Legs. Gastronomole's Cooking has a chance to only sell burnt food or leftovers.
2 Magic Mishaps: "Magic resources will be scarce." Less Magic Pot drops. Maximum Relic uses are halved, rounded up.
3 Ferocious Foes: "Enemies will strike for more damage." All enemies deal 50% more damage, rounded down. Some enemies glow red and instantly kill upon contact.
4 Robust Rogues: "Enemies have been bewitched with increased vitality." Enemies have 50% more health. Bosses have 50% more full health pips, rounded up.
5 Unending Endurance: "The well beneath has expanded. Each stage will be longer."
6 Deadly Dilemma: "The two paths at the end of a well will be more treacherous then before." More red signs appear at the beginning of stages. More ambush side rooms appear.
7 Omega Omen: "A dark magic has enchanted the Omega Saw. The mechanical menace will pose an even bigger threat." The Omega Saw appears sooner and is faster. It glows red and has no wrist guard on which to Shovel Drop.
8 Hard Times: "Shop prices will be staggering as gems be harder to come by" Prices at all merchants are increased by 100%. Gems spawned in the Well have decreased value.
9 Cursed Goods: "Follow Items will now pose a threat." All Follow Items drop when Shovel Knight is hit. Knightmare Keys and Eggs appear and free a hostile stalking spirit upon breaking.
10 All Is Lost: "Each world requires a sacrifice. Prepare to lose accessories." An Accessory is sacrificed at random at the beginning of each World. Slightly more ambush side rooms appear. Prices at all merchants are increased by 150% from default. Black Knight appears as a boss just after the end of a run.
