The number of Joustus card types grows daily. We mustn't upset the game's delicate balance!

— 'Liquid Samurai', Shovel Knight: King of Cards

The Liquid Samurai Reavers are minor enemies in Shovel Knight: King of Cards and in the Puzzler's Pack DLC of Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon. They are blob creatures taking the shape of blue samurai wielding razor claws, and together, with the rest of their brethren, they loyally serve The Enchantress. They only appear in the Tower of Fate.

Story[]

Liquid Samurai Reavers show up in the ending of the four campaigns, even after the destruction of the Tower of Fate. Some are seen wandering as NPCS the Tower hub in Specter of Torment and the Tower of Joustus in King of Cards.

Behavior and Tactics[]

Treasure Trove[]

In Treasure Trove, unlike the other two Samurai variants, the Reavers don't move by running; instead, they do spinning jumps. While jumping, they can still damage King Knight but can't be harmed by his attacks. When attacking, Reavers use their claws to perform plunge attacks.

They possess 2 hit points and deal 1 damage point. They drop two red gems worth 50 gold when defeated.

Pocket Dungeon[]

In Pocket Dungeon, Liquid Samurai Reavers are Legendary Path foes in the Tower of Fate. They do not have a special ability like other Liquid Samurai, but still pose a bigger threat, having the most health points ( (5)) and dealing 2 damage points per attack.

Reavers chain with Liquid Samurai Swordsmen and Archers. This is the best way to deal with them without getting massive damage from direct attacks.

Joustus Card[]

In King of Cards, the Liquid Samurai Reaver Joustus card has 2 Count Arrows: one facing left and the other one up.

Trivia[]

  • The Blue Liquid Samurai were originally conceived for Shovel of Hope, at which point they were supposed to be able to attack with both a sword and a bow and arrow. However, they were cut from the game and thus only make cameo appearances in the ending cutscenes of Shovel of Hope and Plague of Shadows, as well as in the Tower of Fate hub in Specter of Torment. In the latter, they wield a sword instead of their claws.
  • The Blue Liquid Samurai was removed during the development of the original campaign as they slowed the player's pace through the Tower of Fate stages. Unlike Goldarmors, the developers wanted the samurai to be fought more quickly and appear more frequently.[1]
  • Their original artwork for the Blue Liquid Samurai depicts it holding a three-sectioned staff, but only the sword and bow switch sprites can be found on the Liquid Samurai's sprite sheet. This weapon-switching animation was then reused for the playable Liquid Samurai in Shovel Knight Showdown.
