Propeller Knight, Shovel Knight: Shovel of Hope

Propeller Knight is one of eight Knights of the Order of No Quarter who serve the Enchantress. He is the captain and boss of the Flying Machine, a giant airship.

Official Bio[]

This aerodynamic ace commands the Enchantress' flying machine with the cocksure attitude of a sky pirate! With his Heli-Helmet, he can zoom short distances with ease. Shovel Knight encounters Propeller Knight on top of the aircraft as it zooms through the sky; earth fights against air in a true battle of elements!
  • Pros: Talented Fencer, Mechanical Heli-Helmet, Debonair!
  • Cons: Arrogance, Lightweight, Outrageous Accent!

Dig the Vote pitch[]

Tone[]

Propeller Knight is brash, melodramatic, and arrogant. His campaign will be funnier, and focus on his devil-may-care misadventures.

Original Play Style Ideas[]

  • Charge Jump – Hold down the jump button to charge your jump and release it to go soaring into the air! Let loose a charging jump even after walking off a ledge.
  • Slow Fall
  • Charge Fencing – Hold down attack button to unleash different lunging attacks
  • Charge Cancel – Cancel charge attacks into a laugh taunt and store them for later.

Propeller Knight ended up taking the 4th place of the Dig the Vote selection, with an average score of 5.67.

Personality[]

Despite working for the Order of No Quarter, he is a fairly magnanimous knight. He is flamboyant, charming, and dashing, often so much so that others swoon at his feet. He has a reputation of teasing his fellow knights, possibly even with flirtatious intent.

Story[]

Before Treasure Trove, Propeller Knight and Cooper had a rivalry as sky adventurers. Cooper, the rooster gent, believed that the sky belonged to everyone. Propeller, as a sky pirate with his own crew, would however rather claim it as his personal playground. Their conflicting viewpoints would eventually deepen the conflict between them.
At some point, Propeller Knight locked away at the Lover's Vista his True Love's Rose, an item holding meaning to both his rival and him.

In King of Cards, Propeller Knight is roaming the skies of the Birder Kingdom in his Flying Machine. He attacks the Glidewing with his crew after King Knight stole his Rose, believing his long-time rival Cooper to be the culprit. After his defeat, he appears aboard the Glidewing to play Joustus. He jokes that the Glidewing's crew can't keep away for too long and raises his glass of juice as a toast .
In the ending, Propeller Knight, helped by the Enchantress, lays siege once again on the Glidewing and captures Cooper, showing his supremacy over the Valley's skies.

In Specter of Torment, Specter Knight invades the Flying Machine to invite Propeller Knight to join the Enchantress's Order. He promises him the control of his mistress's flagship and the powers to get rid of all of his flying rivals. The flying knight however gets offended by the phantom's assumption that he has any rival, and attacks him to throw him overboard.

After his defeat, Propeller Knight shows up again in the dining hall of the Tower of Fate. There, he complains about the poor quality of the selection of juices at the dark lair's juice bar, and propose to bring his private reserve instead.

In the ending, Propeller Knight leads the Enchantress's fleet to take complete control of the skies above the Valley. Cooper passes by in a small aircraft to give him back the True Love's Rose. Later on at the Tower of Fate, the sky pirate, surrounded by the other knights of the newly-formed Order of No Quarter, bows down to the Enchantress.

Shortly before Specter Knight's confrontation with the Enchantress in Specter of Torment, Propeller Knight is captured by the Mirror of Fate wreaking havoc. He awakes in the Colosseum with a headache and no recollection from before, believing it to be the consequence of some wild party. He sets to carve a path with his sword until he finds again his Flying Machine.

Reaching the Flying Machine's Sky Deck, the sky pirate encounters Tinker Knight who is both relieved to find a friendly face, and hopes to get out as well with his colleague's airship and plan. They partner for their next fight and meet again before the Mirror Chamber. There, the machinist starts doubting the sky captain's plan. They call out each other on their respective lack of solid planning, and their dispute degenerates into a fight. Propeller Knight wins and later shatters the Mirror of Fate, freeing himself from its twisted realms. The two knights later meet with each other on the real Flying Machine; Tinker Knight proposed him to test a highly experimental rocket engine-propelled frame for the flying knight's helmet. The sky pirate trusts in his colleague's plans and soars through the sky with the powerful invention, believing the Order of No Quarter is on the path of greatness.

While trapped in the Mirror's world, Propeller Knight also encounters Treasure Knight in the Iron Whale's Treasure Vault, both captains without their ship. They start wagering on the true culprits of their predicament, but the Order's treasurer proposes a more lucrative competition: the one who earns the most treasures during this adventure wins the earnings of the other. The airship captain accepts in good sport, and they partner for their next fight. They meet again before the Mirror Chamber but find themselves at a tie, having won as much fights as each other. They then proceed to a tiebreaking fight, which the airship captain loses. Later on in the real world, Propeller Knight reaches the Iron Whale with his Flying Machine to honor his defeat, and delivers a bounty of 75000 treasures to a much appreciating Treasure Knight.

In Shovel of Hope, Propeller Knight, knight of the Order of No Quarter, reigns supreme over the skies of the Valley with his Flying Machine and fleet. Shovel Knight confronts him on the ship's open air deck and is not amused by the charming antics of the sky pirate. Propeller Knight gives in to the seriousness of his adversary and fights him. Upon defeat, he drops down his rose.

After his defeat, they meet again when Shovel Knight drops down at the dining hall of the Tower of Fate, surrounded by the full knights of the Order of No Quarter, and rejoices at the prospect of a Battle Royale with the Blue Borrower. After his defeat, if Shovel Knight helps him climb back from the pit, Propeller Knight expresses his joy for the fight he just had. He even considers joining the adventurer on his quests if they can be as much entertaining.

In the ending after the Order's fall, Propeller Knight renounces to his domination over the skies. He still lives his life carefree on his Flying Machine, hosting parties and basking in the love and admiration he inspires in his guests.

In Plague of Shadows, Propeller Knight is instead confronted by his felon colleague Plague Knight. The sky pirate was informed of the alchemist's objective of collecting powerful essences, but is still disappointed in his lack of stylish entrance. Unfazed by the knight's jeers, he charges on and is eventually defeated. Upon defeat, he drops down his rose.

They meet again in the Tower's dining hall after Plague Knight unknowingly drops down in the middle of his former colleagues' banquet, which amuses Propeller Knight. After Shovel Knight crashes down on their diner party and is knocked out by the fall, he joins on his colleagues' revenge upon the rogue alchemist in a Battle Royale. He is eventually defeated once again and left to hang over a pit by an uncaring Shovel Knight, while Plague Knight makes his escape.

In the ending after the Order's fall, the former sky pirate arranged for a private diner between Plague Knight and Mona on the Flying Machine's open air deck. Dressed as a waiter, he attends himself to his guests' table.

In Pocket Dungeon, Propeller Knight is one of the many knights who were trapped inside the titular artifact. His presence inside the puzzle box shaped its landscapes, adding the Flying Machine to the dungeon. He can be encountered randomly as a boss fight and recruited to Puzzle Knight's campsite.

Strategy[]

Propeller Knight has several different attacks. He will fly across the stage, make quick lunges with his sword, use his helmet to launch you into the air (and then attempt to impale you on his rapier on the way down), or try to blow you into the holes at the edge of the stage. After lowering his health, he will call in an airship to attack you. They first launch bombs at you, which he will then try to blow at you. You can knock the bombs into Propeller Knight, doing heavy damage. Upon losing more health, Propeller Knight will command the airship to launch two large cannonballs at the stage, breaking the platform into three segments and making positioning markedly more difficult.

Pocket Dungeon[]

As a playable knight, Propeller Knight's main ability grants a +1 attack for each lone foe he defeats; however, Chains reset his attack power and deal to him 1 more damage than normal. This would naturally lead to generally avoid chaining units; however, doing so would result in a drastic decrease in the gem gain, resulting in having less resources necessary to buy useful things, such as Relics, making it necessary to find the right balance. Nevertheless, with the right strategy, Propeller Knight can use his ability to its fullest potential to reach absurd levels of attack power and deal massive damage, particularly while inside a boss arena, where he can even one-shot bosses.

His Refract Ability, Corkscrew Kick, lets him fly up; he then quickly dives into the first open space available above a unit in the selected column, damaging his foes like a normal attack. However, for the kick to work, both a unit and an open space above must be present, as the Corkscrew Kick requires a unit to pounce on, otherwise Propeller Knight will just end up at the bottom of the dungeon, or being unable to move at all if surrounded by too many enemies. The divekick can be slightly oriented towards either the left or right directions, making it possible to use it to either escape dangerous situations, or to quickly chase after slippery foes. Furthermore, his blade charges up in power after performing one attack in each one of the four directions; this makes the Corkscrew Kick more powerful, increasing its attack power of +1, and giving it piercing properties like a Spear. The Corkscrew kick is treated as a regular attack, meaning that Propeller Knight can take full advantage to the attack Relics, such as the Third Amulet or the Single Glove.

Before his fight "Propeller Knight: Ahh, my petite blue friend. The sunset, she is beautiful, no?"
"Shovel Knight: Get down here and face me, you gyroscopic jester!"
"Propeller Knight: Oh! So rude! My crew, they were not hospitable? My ship, it was not magnificent?"
"Shovel Knight: I'm not here to be entertained! I must reach the Tower of Fate!"
"Propeller Knight: All business, no pleasure, such a shame.
Very well, then! En garde!
"

Before his fight "Plague Knight: They let airheads have airships? Hee hee, ha ha ha! Come down here, I need to borrow something!"
"Propeller Knight: How pedestrian! I was expecting the grand entrance! Substance over style, always with you scientists. So, I heard the most delicious rumor - you envy my suave, daring nature, do you? Get in line!"
"Plague Knight: Haha, don't flatter yourself, flyboy! Your essence is the teensiest part of my plan!"
"Propeller Knight: My essence can't be taken from me! But if you ask nicely, I'd consider giving you flying lessons! Of course, my pernicious pupil...
I'll have to charge!
"

Before his fight "Propeller Knight: Oh hoh hoh! Such tattered robes! Are you here to join the galley crew, then?
Magnificent!
"
"Specter Knight: On the contrary, you shall join us. An alliance of elite knights will surely compliment your carefree crew. As the captain of the Enchantress's flagship, the skies will belong to your rivals no more."
"Propeller Knight: Rivals? Me?!
Never
! I'll cast you overboard! Hope that your blade is better honed than your
sense of style
.
En garde!
"
Talked to at the Tower's dining hall "Propeller Knight: Hoh, with the juice selection here, we'll be right at home among the commoners! How quaint! Must I send for my private reserve?"

Before his fight "Cooper: I knew it! You scoundrel! You lout! You...
socialite!
The sky isn't yours to own!
"
"Propeller Knight:
Ahh,
my red-combed compatriot. How time passes. Tell me now,
why
did you steal my rose?
"
"King Knight:
Ohh...
"
"Propeller Knight: And rather than take it yourself, you sent this well-manicured goon in your place?
I hate to ruin such fine foes, but I've seen enough!
En garde!
"
Talked to aboard the Glidewing "Propeller Knight: Surprised to see me here? You should know, I'm far too charming to be kept away for too long,
ho ho!

A glass of juice, my friend! To flight! To conquest! To Joustus!
"

Third fight in Treasure Knight's story mode "Propeller Knight: Ahh, my dear colleague. What's a captain without their ship? And yet, here we are, on land. Tragic, no?"
"Treasure Knight: Indeed. This is no doubt the work of our mutual employer, I'd wager."
"Propeller Knight: Well,
I'd wager
it's some sort of treachery by her low-level crew...
"
"Treasure Knight: How about we both wager our takings here on who can grab more of the lucre surrounding us?
Winner takes all.
"
"Propeller Knight: Why, how delightfully sporting! It's a bet, then! Hoh hoh, do try and keep up!"
Ninth fight in Treasure Knight's story mode "Treasure Knight: There you are! Good, let's tally up... tell me, how many adventuring parties have you crashed?"
"Propeller Knight: Hoh hoh! Why, I crash
every
party, but since we last conversed.. eight.
"
"Treasure Knight: Eight, eh? Well, well... So have I. Looks like we'll need to break the tie."
"Propeller Knight: A tiebreaker? Just you and me? We dance, then! En garde!"
Victory speeches "Propeller Knight: Losing is
such
a bad look! If you tire of the indignity, you're welcome to join my crew!
"
"Propeller Knight: Ahhh, how
invigorating!
How
uplifting!
We should do this more often, no?
"
"Propeller Knight:
Oh ho ho!
All business, no pleasure, such a shame.
"
"Propeller Knight: You're like a second-rate airship. Creaking, weak, and full of hot air!"

Spin-offs[]

Random lines before his fight "Propeller Knight:
Oh hoh hoh!
A duel, with me? Why, I'd love to... In fact, I insist!
En garde!
"
"Propeller Knight:
Ahh,
here to get blown away, like the rest of my competition. How very droll.
"
"Propeller Knight: What a fun, simple game. Just like dancing through clouds or falling in love. Let's play!"
First time talked to at the camp "Propeller Knight: I may have said that life is a game, but
this
is not what I intended! Everyone looks like a block!
"
Talked to again at the camp "Propeller Knight:
Ahh
, what a party! Do you mind if I cut in? I'd love to give them the what-for!
"

Talked to at Castle Quandary "Propeller Knight:
Ooh la la,
this architecture is magnifique! Historical! But let's be honest, the view is even better from my Flying Machine, no?
"

Trivia[]

  • Propeller Knight, Phantom Striker, and Mr. Hat are the only main characters in Shovel Knight to use a sword as a weapon.
    • He is the only member of the Order of No Quarter who wields a sword as their weapon.
  • In the credits of Plague of Shadows, he is seen wearing a tuxedo, making him one of two characters in Shovel Knight seen wearing an entirely different outfit, the other being Specter Knight (as Donovan).
    • Interestingly, while in this outfit, his helmet lacks his signature propeller blades.
  • Propeller Knight's design, dialogue, and fighting style are reminiscent of 18th century European military uniforms. His speech patterns and accent are French.
    • Before his boss fight in Shovel of Hope, he calls Shovel Knight "petite". Although incorrectly agreed to the feminine form, it translates to "small " in French.
    • Propeller Knight's weakness of "ridiculous accent" is a reference to the Frenchmen in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
    • In the French version of the game, Propeller Knight speaks in broken French, such as using incorrect determiners for certain words and sprinkling English words in his sentences.
