Story[]

Before Pocket Dungeon[]

Puzzle Knight first left his family to find the Pocket Dungeon when his daughter was only a child. With the intention of finding a magical telescope said to be locked inside the Pocket Dungeon as a gift to his daughter, he ended up getting trapped inside the cube, being forced to serve it as its eternal master. When he fell in, the key to the cube shattered into 4 fragments which were scattered across the wind and ending up in the Shrines.

He spent years trying to solve the Pocket Dungeon without his key, but to no avail. His presence inside the puzzle box shaped its landscapes, adding the Scholar's Sanctum to the dungeon. Eventually, after many years of solitude, other people started falling into the puzzle trap, including Chester and his Bohto Wagon. Desperate, he hatched a new, less noble escape plan: by gathering all imprisoned knights and training them, one may be able to beat the last stage of the Pocket Dungeon and confront the Puzzle Master himself. Then by beating the unsuspecting knight, Puzzle Knight would exchange his place of Pocket Dungeon Master with them and be freed from the cube.

With Chester, he set a Camp before the Plains, where all trapped people can exchange their knowledge of the Pocket Dungeon and prepare for their next try at solving it.

Pocket Dungeon[]

In Pocket Dungeon, Puzzle Knight can first be found in the tutorial, where he and Chester rescue Shovel Knight from the monsters in the Plains. He then teaches him how to survive in the Pocket Dungeon. Against all of Puzzle Knight's expectations, the Blue Burrower eventually finds a chest containing one of the pieces of his shattered key. The Puzzle Master tells him that it is the key to an heirloom without telling more on its purpose. He would later warn to bring the 5 Key Fragments to him and to not attempt to assemble them.

Once at the Camp, Puzzle Knight explains to his new guest that the only way for all of them to escape is to beat all levels and then defeat the Pocket Dungeon Master. He then shows Shovel Knight the way out of the Camp and on through the Pocket Dungeon's challenge. After that, throughout the game, Puzzle Knight can be found in the camp, offering advice to the trapped knights.

At the Flying Machine, before Prism Knight's boss fight, Puzzle Knight can be found talking to her. He reinstates the importance of gathering more heroes to her, something he can only do with her help. She however questions if his plan won't simply leave everyone else trapped in there as she knows there is a better way to save everyone, the key her father was researching before ending up trapped inside the puzzle cube. This causes Puzzle Knight to start to realize she is actually his daughter, but he has to flee before saying anything as he could hear someone approaching.

At the Scholar's Sanctum, Puzzle Knight reveals himself as Pocket Dungeon Master and his plan to find someone to take his place while he gets to escape. However, he ends up losing and, if the Key Fragments haven't all been collected, Puzzle Knight, having returned to his senses and better nature allows the character who defeated him to escape alone from the box, while Puzzle Knight remains inside, weeping.

If the Key Fragments have been collected, however, Prism Knight appears after her father's defeat with the rebuilt key. It is then used on the arena's keyhole on the floor and reveals a final stage: the Tower of Fate.

After getting through the final layer, the three meet The Enchantress. The dark magician mocks them and reveals to have been manipulating Prism Knight into trapping the Valley's knights inside the cube so that she could do as she pleased on the outside. She ensnares Puzzle Knight and Prism Knight in magical chains and intents on defeating the third member of the group, one of the imprisoned knights, in order to keep everyone trapped within the Pocket Dungeon.

After her defeat, she uses her dark arts to transform Puzzle Knight into the Master Mind as a last resort to keep her plan safe. After the monstrous creature is beaten, the Puzzle Master returns to normal and all of the trapped characters are allowed to escape.

During the ending, Puzzle Knight and Prism Knight are talking to each other in front of a lake under a starry sky, finally reunited as father and daughter. The scholar, after a conversation, opens what remained of the Pocket Dungeon with the key to find a telescope, which he reveals to be the reason he attempted to solve the cube in the first place. He meant it as a gift to his daughter, which he can finally give. He tells her that every time she looks through it, a shooting star will pass by as a way for her to always find him. She then raises a toast to their next adventure together.

In the Puzzler's Pack DLC, Puzzle Knight is unlocked as playable character after he was defeated once. After beating the Scholar's Sanctum, he is confronted to another Puzzle Knight who accuses him to be an imposter.

As a playable knight[]

Puzzle Knight's main ability is to spin the units around him clockwise. This ability is a useful tool in order to move into the dungeon, as it can set up chains, or move aside potential threats away from resources like healing items or a Treasure Chest. However, neither Bosses nor foes that are too big can be spun around, making them immovable obstacles.

His Refract Ability, Spatial Shift, lets him shift the rows or columns of the board, but at the cost of finding fewer restorative Potions. Thanks to this powerful ability, Puzzle Knight can even more easily set up chains, recover lost gems, or reach useful resources. However, once again, neither Bosses nor foes that are too big can be shifted in position.

Intro, inside the Bohto Wagon "????: You haven't given up already, have you?"

[Shovel Knight wakes up]

"Chester: Oh good, you're still with us. We pulled you away from all the monsters just in time!"
"Puzzle Knight: Salutations, I'm Puzzle Knight. You look just as lost as everyone else who ends up trapped here after touching that
confounded
cube.
This is the Pocket Dungeon, you see. A perfect snare, even for a puzzle prodigy such as myself.
Completely unsolvable
.
"
"Chester: He's been trying for years, y'know. We've been riding my Bohto Wagon around, trying to gather up new arrivals like yourself."
"Puzzle Knight: There have been rather
a lot
of them lately, haven't there, Chester?
This one looks handy with that shovel. With your knack for nicking knick-knacks, perhaps you ought to put him to work digging us out, eh?
"

[A tremor shakes the Bohto Wagon]

"Puzzle Knight:
What in the Seven Ciphers was that?!
"
Tutorial, Blocks "Puzzle Knight: A block blockade! Curses! We won't be going anywhere until that’s cleared out.
You there, with the shovel! Make yourself useful, will you?
"
Talked to while clearing the Blocks "Puzzle Knight: Give those blocks a little
bump
, would you?
"
Tutorial, Beetos "Puzzle Knight: Notice that you can chain together matching blocks, as long as they are touching. Chains are quite brilliant, don't you think?
But none of this will matter if the Beetos get us. I hear them
skittering...
Oh, I feel faint!
"
Talked to while clearing the Beetos "Puzzle Knight: Defeat those Beetos!
Dont let them near me!
"
Tutorial, Potions "Puzzle Knight: You didn't think they'd just let you run up and smack them, did you? They hit back, of course, whenever you attack.
Only the one next to you, though. By chaining your attack, you'll dispatch the whole group from a safe distance.
Alas, you won't get by without taking some damage, but luckily, potions are plentiful. Here, try one!
"
Talked to before drinking the Potion "Puzzle Knight: Try that nearby Potion!"
Training, stampede "Puzzle Knight:
Refreshing
, isn't it? You'll get used to the taste quickly if you want to stay alive!
Lastly, time works differently in the Pocket Dungeon. It
rushes
forward whenever you move, and passes by
slowly
if you stand still.
...Uh oh... Speaking of which... Beeto stampede,
incoming!
Remember, don’t rush - take time to plan your next step, but be quick and decisive.
"
Training, outro "Puzzle Knight: Oh me, oh my. What have we here? Yes, yes,
of course!
After so long, the pieces have begun to fall into place!
When I fell into the Pocket Dungeon, I lost my key to a special heirloom. It shattered into five Key Fragments, and
you've found one!

Thank you,
uh...
"
"Shovel Knight: Shovel Knight."
"Puzzle Knight: Shovel Knight! Hero of the puzzled! Onward, my merry band!"

[Chester leaves with the Bohto Wagon]

"Puzzle Knight: Well, our encampment is just up ahead. We'll stay out of the way while you clear the path.
You needn't go on foot. After enough enemies are defeated, a door will appear, leading us out of here. Simply unlock it, and step through.
Oh, and you're no good to us unconscious, so do remember about the potions, yes?
"

Campfire intro "Chester: Here we are, home sweet home. It's not much yet, but it's a solid base of operations."
"Puzzle Knight: If we're to escape, we'll need to work our way through each level and defeat the ruler of this place, the Pocket Dungeon Master."
"Chester: Who is he? Or she? No idea. But we saw some other knights fall in here too. I bet they'd be willing to help if you cross paths."
"Puzzle Knight: Make yourself comfortable, but please follow me when you're ready to embark."
Hangout intro "Puzzle Knight: Your quest lies beyond this threshold, but there is one last matter to consider..."

[The Stock Mode menu opens]

"Puzzle Knight: When you're ready, take the exit above. As for me, I’ll be here,
deep in thought.
If you require my advice, just give me a firm
jostle
!
"

Campfire tips "Puzzle Knight: Hmm, I
shudder
to think what might happen if we aren't able to find all the Key Fragments.
"
"Puzzle Knight: Chester stands at the ready with the Bohto Wagon. In case you fall in battle, he'll whisk you away, back to camp."
"Puzzle Knight: Chester thinks these...other knights...will be eager to assist us. If you ask me, they'll need to have some sense
knocked
into them, first.
"
"Puzzle Knight: Whatever you do,
don't
try to assemble the Key Fragments on your own. You
must
bring them all to me!
"
"Puzzle Knight:
Harrumph!
I have no problem spending years solving a single puzzle, but I would prefer to be doing so from the outside.
"
"Puzzle Knight:
Mysterious
cloaked figure, you say? How odd. Surely, I would let you know if I ever came across one.
"
"Puzzle Knight: One step at a time, that's what I keep telling myself. What's that? How long have I been here?
A very long time indeed,
hoo hoo!
"
"Puzzle Knight: You know what kind of enemy never hits back after being attacked? One that you've just defeated with a fatal blow."
"Puzzle Knight: Chester insists that saving keys to unlock chests can change the course of battle, thanks to the weapons inside.
Pah!
What would he know?
"
"Puzzle Knight: My research has shown that by chaining attacks quickly, your Gem Meter will charge up, and you'll gain more Gems."
First time entering Prism Knight's boss room "Puzzle Knight: Ah, at last, I've made it to your meeting spot. Why such a faraway place?"
"Prism Knight: I needed to talk to you privately. You've been saying that we need even more knights? How many is enough?"
"Puzzle Knight: Well, preferably all of them! Their keen minds are integral to my escape plan!"
"Prism Knight: Puzzle Knight, I have a bad feeling about this. Won't defeating the Pocket Dungeon Master just... trap everyone else in here!?"
"Puzzle Knight: ..."
"Prism Knight: I know there's a better way to escape the Pocket Dungeon. My father was searching for a key to this place."
"Puzzle Knight: How...curious. Your...father?
Here?
"
"Prism Knight: Yes. When I was very young, he went missing. Exploring the Pocket Dungeon, apparently."
"Puzzle Knight: Wait a moment. Are ... Are
you...

Someone's approaching! I must go!
"
Entering his boss room in the Scholar's Sanctum "Puzzle Knight:
Ohoho!
Hahaha!
Heeeehahaha!
Imagine,
YOU,
making it all the way to the top of the Scholar’s Sanctum, to the Pocket Dungeon Master.
Yes, that's right. It’s me. What a plan!
What subterfuge!
I thought you'd
never
figure it out.
I’ve been here for
years,
unraveling the mysteries of the Pocket Dungeon. Being a puzzle master, I couldn't resist.
But my failure to solve it left me trapped inside... Forever to serve the Pocket Dungeon as its eternal "master".
What a cruel joke!

I’ll have the last laugh, though. I've been gathering up all of you witless heroes, teaching you the art of puzzlery.
All to find...a new master, who is worthy of taking my place. And here you are.
With your defeat, I'll finally be free to escape.
It's time the student becomes
the master
!
"
Defeating Puzzle Knight without all five Key Fragments "Puzzle Knight:
Aggghhh!!!
I thought I'd ...
I had it!
I had it all figured out! How could I be wrong
again?

You
... You are beyond mastery. My brightest pupil. You've outshone me... Just... Just go.
I regret deceiving you. But at the very least, I tried to make it
fun,
right?
I suppose I'll need a different strategy, if I'm to ever solve my way out of this riddle.
"

[Puzzle Knight opens up a portal with his Compass of Conjuring]

"Puzzle Knight: Good luck out there, friend. Perhaps we’ll meet again,
someday.
"
Defeating Puzzle Knight with all five Key Fragments "Puzzle Knight:
Agggh!
I'm beaten!
I'm bested!
I'm vanquished!
I'm stuck here forever!
Say it's not true!
"
"Prism Knight: It’s not true!
Hang on!
Look, here's the key, we've assembled it all!
"
"Puzzle Knight: I...
What?
Could that be... the key to the Pocket Dungeon?
Impossible!
I watched it scatter to the winds. It's been restored?
"
"Prism Knight: Yes! I had plenty of help, but by working together, we recovered all the fragments."
"Puzzle Knight: Unbelievable! You found me, Prism Knight... And actually saved me, and everyone else. With this key...
we can escape!

Ha ha ha!
I feel so lucky. I guess sometimes a key part of the solution is...
a little bit of luck
!

Well, no time like the present. Let's put that key to good use and
get out of here!
"

[The Key opens up a hole on the floor]

"Prism Knight:
Whoa...
What's happening?
"
"Puzzle Knight: That didn't sound good. Apparently there's a final layer to this conundrum. Let's go and finish this,
once and for all...
Uh, you first, friend.
"
Entering The Enchantress's boss room in the Tower of Fate "Cloaked Figure:
Oh ho ho,
what a surprise. I can scarcely believe you made it here.
"
"Puzzle Knight:
Show yourself, fiend!
"
"Enchantress:
Oh ho ho...
it is none other than me! The Enchantress!
"
"Puzzle Knight:
You!
You're the one who has
imprisoned
us all here!
"
"Enchantress: I had
plenty
of help,
hahaha!
Didn't I, Prism Knight? Or should I say, “Prison Knight”?
Ohhh-hohoh!

Traveling freely out of the Pocket Dungeon, placing the cube in all the
perfect
spots, and then diving right back in.
Her gifts would have been quite useful for you,
wouldn't you say,
Puzzle Knight
?
"
"Puzzle Knight: ..."
"Prism Knight: ... So, You've been using me this entire time. This was all a trap you invented?"
"Enchantress: Oh, dear me, no, I found it. And it's not a trap, it's an
opportunity
. With all the heroes locked away here, I'm doing as I please on the outside!
But the game's almost up,
isn't it?
Time for one last turn!
"
Defeating the Master Mind "Puzzle Knight:
Oof
, I fear I may have gotten a little big-headed back there! It's a big head, you see. Dizzy. Big head, lots of room for ...
puzzles
... I...
"
"Prism Knight: You need to rest. Looks like the exit to the outside world is right through that portal. Let’s get out of here!"
"Puzzle Knight: I guess this is it...
after so  long.
It's actually solved. Is this real?
"

[The dungeon starts to collapse]

"Prism Knight: Uh oh... Hey,
snap out of it.
This place is coming apart at the seams. We need to move,
now!
"

[Puzzle Knight widens the portal]

"Puzzle Knight: ... There! Room enough for everyone. Let’s all be free from this dastardly contraption for good!
All the pieces are finally in place.
We've done it!
Time to go!!!
"
Post-credits scene "Prism Knight: ...and so, I came looking for you as soon as I was able! Your notes left me clues that led to the Pocket Dungeon and the key."
"Puzzle Knight: Remarkable... And to think you were just a child when you discovered all of this!
Not being able to see you grow up has taken a toll on me. I thought about it every day... What my daughter was like... If she was happy.
You’re everything I'd dreamed of. Thank you for coming after me. We have so much catching up to do...
"

[Puzzle Knight takes the Key from Prism Knight and opens up the Pocket Dungeon]

"Puzzle Knight:
But first,
let me show you why I sought to solve the Pocket Dungeon in the first place.
You see, there's a hidden prize for solving the puzzle. An heirloom I was hoping to give to you.
"

[Puzzle Knight extracts a telescope from the cube and gives it to Prism Knight]

"Prism Knight: Oh...wow... A telescope.
It's beautiful!
"
"Puzzle Knight: It's more than that. Give it a try. Take a look!"

[Prism Knight looks through the telescope and sees a shooting star passing by]

"Prism Knight:
Oh!
A shooting star! What are the odds?
"
"Puzzle Knight: Well, statistically, 1-to-1. That is, any time you look through it, a star will shoot across the sky, from me...to you.
That way, even if we're apart, we'll never lose each other again.
"
"Prism Knight: Thanks, Dad... Here’s to finding the next adventure."

First time talked to after unlocking him "Puzzle Knight: No more standing idly by in camp! It's high time I tackled this
accursed
puzzle and conquered it at last!
"
Talked to again "Puzzle Knight:
Hoo hoo!
Let's put on our thinking caps and solve this puzzle with precision!
"
Entering his boss room as Puzzle Knight "Puzzle Knight:
Ohoho!
Hahaha!
Heeeehahaha!
Imagine,
YOU,
making it all the way to the top of the Scholar’s Sanctum, to the Pocket Dungeon Master.
Wait a moment.
Aha!
The imposter... is you!
"
Talked to at Castle Quandary "Puzzle Knight: I've been stuck here for ages, and yet I'd never seen this place until now. How silly of me - I should have looked up!"

Trivia[]

  • Puzzle Knight speaks five different languages. Fish Head's language could be one of them.[1]
  • Puzzle Knight's official bio in the "SHOVEL KNIGHT POCKET DUNGEON LAUNCHES WINTER 2021" on Yacht Club Games' website[2] is different from his bio from his debut tweet from 2020.[3] His original bio reads as: "A brilliant and apparently renowned master of mystery, Puzzle Knight travels the land in search of confounding curiosities for his grand puzzle collection. He may seem vulnerable, but his Compass of Conjuring acts as both a magical teaching tool and a clunky-yet-effective melee weapon. Puzzle Knight is eager to help Shovel Knight by demonstrating his great knowledge of puzzles and riddles of all kinds... but has he met his match with the Pocket Dungeon?"
  • Puzzle Knight's design on the artwork displaying him and Chester on his Big Bohto caravan has small differences in his design than his other artwork, such as: his arm straps are more detailed, strap around his chest is a dark blue, and his belt is brown.
  • Puzzle Knight is a widower.[4]
