The Quandary Sage, Puzzler's Pack DLC

The Quandary Sage is a minor character in the Puzzler's Pack DLC of Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon. They guard the Quandaries at Castle Quandary.

Appearance[]

The Quandary Sage wears a dark tunic with a bottom red fringe. Their pink cape is wrapped around their neck and trails behind them. They wear a symmetrical golden helmet shaped like a slightly rotated puzzle piece, rotated in a clockwise manner so that the bottom-right corner aligns with their neck. Their helmet's plume resembles two small green leaves. Their gauntlets are the same golden color as their helmet. They wear a simple brown seed bag across their left arm, while their other arm wields a wooden spear, which is bound by a pink ribbon.

Story[]

Pocket Dungeon[]

The Quandary Sage can be met at Castle Quandary, which can be reached after fully growing the magic bean at the Hedge Farm. They stand by the Quandaries and explain their purpose, but also that they require Gems 10,000 each to unlock them.

Once all four Quandaries for one character have been cleared, Marathon, a mode where endless waves of enemies come one after the other, is unlocked; the Feat Marathon Master asks only to clear 30 of them, but by going the extra mile and clearing 100 waves, the Quandary Sage themselves will become a playable knight.

Abilities[]

Unlocking the Quandary Sage will earn a special ribbon with their mask on it for the Guidebook; similar secret ribbons can be earned by reaching 10 loops of Venture Endlessly and talking to Beefto in his special sideroom portal, completing a run with a Spinwulf, completing a run with Schmutz, winning a run with the Adult Bean's mustache equipped, and completing the hardest of the secret Quandaries of an unchanging Random Knight (achievable thanks to a special hat from Mr. Hat). Once all ribbons are earned, a crown appears in the Guidebook.

The Quandary Sage has an extended reach, like the Spear item, but cannot find and equip Relics under any circumstances. Also, being a secret character, the Sage does not receive a statue from Sledge Farmer, even when their two Quandaries are completed.

Furthermore, as they lack a Refraction Realm Quandary, the Quandary Sage, together with Random Knight, Schmutz, and the Spinwulf, are the only characters that lack a Refract Ability of their own.

Trivia[]

  • In the game's files, the Quandary Sage is simply named "Guard".
  • The Quandary Sage, when they become a playable character, can only be found at Castle Quandary; likewise, the Spinwulf and Schmutz can instead only be found at the Camp.
  • When entering the Quandaries Room as the Quandary Sage themselves, not only multiple unfinished, inaccessible Quandary Portals can be seen, but also there is no background music whatsoever, somewhat implying that the Castle's signature challenges are less mystical in nature, and more in a constant work-in-progress state. Of all the Quandary Portals, the Quandary Sage can only access two of them.
