Random Knight is a character used to represent the random character option at the beginning of a match or run in Shovel Knight Showdown and Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon. His counterpart is Shuffle Knight.

Appearance[]

In Showdown, Random Knight is a shadowy silhouette of an armored knight, with a question mark on his face and a smooth helmet plume. He wields a sword with both hands. In Pocket Dungeon, Random Knight's appearance remains the same, but he is now in complete green armor and wield a green sword. Sometimes a small brown bird named Almond is perched upon him.

Story[]

Showdown[]

In Showdown, Random Knight appears in the character select screen. When chosen, a character from the available roster will be randomly selected to be played as.

Pocket Dungeon[]

In Pocket Dungeon, Random Knight appears in the Camp after unlocking 3 knights. He can be seen standing in the Table Room with the bird Almond on his head. Selecting the knight makes the bird fly away.

If the ice block in the Hangout room is hit with Random Knight, he will always sculpt it into other playable characters with a question mark where their faces should be.

Abilities[]

Random Knight's main specialty is the ability of, when starting a run of the Pocket Dungeon, changing randomly at the beginning of the Plains into one of the other playable knights already unlocked, and then continuing the run as them. This shapeshifting ability is disabled when wearing the Almond Hat, making Random Knight a completely ordinary knight with no special abilities whatsoever. However, other than being able to engage in the Quandaries, using the Almond Hat also makes it possible for Random Knight to be able to win a dungeon run as himself, as well as record a personal record in Mona's minigame. Similar events occurs if Shuffle Knight is equipped with the Souffle Hat.

Under normal circumstances, Random Knight is the only character that does not have Quandaries, as he will immediately change into another playable knight when entering the Quandaries' room; that is, unless the special Almond Hat, from Mr. Hat's shop is worn. As the hat deactivates Random Knight's shapeshifting abilities, he can now enter the room as himself, revealing three personal Quandaries for him. However, as an added difficulty, every dialogue, from the Quandary Sage speeches to the description of the challenge is exchanged with a series of "?".

The hardest of these 3 Quandaries, his Character Quest, goes even further, as it substitutes pretty much everything with a "?", which reveal their true appearance only after being bumped into; this results in not knowing what Random Knight is going to attack, which may have grave consequences. It also obscures the remaining HPs of both Random Knight and the ones from the enemies, which are semi-randomized to be either lower or higher than average, and hides the found Relics until equipped, including the ones up for sale.

Completing this hardest of challenges, however, will award a secret ribbon, printed with a leafy question mark, for the Guidebook; similar secret ribbons can be earned by reaching 10 loops of Venture Endlessly and talking to Beefto in his special sideroom portal, completing a run with a Spinwulf, completing a run with Schmutz, winning a run with the Adult Bean's mustache equipped, and unlocking the Quandary Sage. Once all ribbons are earned, a crown appears in the Guidebook. Also, unlike the other two secret characters, Random Knight does receive a statue from Sledge Farmer when his Character Quest Quandary is completed.

As he lacks a Refraction Realm Quandary, Random Knight, together with the Quandary Sage, Schmutz, and the Spinwulf, are the only characters that lack a Refract Ability of their own.

Trivia[]

  • Random Knight was added to Pocket Dungeon with Version 1.1.0.[2] He was previously announced during the January 2022 Yacht Club Games Presents.[3]
  • Unlike other asymmetrical characters with the exception of Shuffle Knight, Random Knight has two sets of sprites for his model so that his question mark never appears backward.
