Knight's Code, first vow: Always help a person in need!

Reize, Shovel Knight: Shovel of Hope

Reize is one of the Wandering Travelers encountered throughout Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove and the Paradox Pack DLC of Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon. Reize was designed by Danny D. Henderson, a.k.a. Seizui, as a Director for a Day.[1] Despite still being a kid, Reize shows a remarkable potential, being able to confront more seasoned fighters on relatively even ground. He has a major role in the story of Specter of Torment.

Official Bio[]

A group of evil knights is terrorizing the countryside? Reize Seatlan is on the scene! This plucky young adventurer travels the land, helping people in need and following his own invented Knight’s Vows. But which of these knights are good, and which ones are bad? Reize is a bit naive but always well-intentioned. How will his twin crystal boomerangs fare against a Shovel Blade?

Relationships[]

Hedge Farmer[]

Uncle told me to be humble in victory, but it
sure is hard
after beating you up so badly!

— 'Reize', Shovel Knight Showdown

Reize's uncle, the Hedge Farmer, seemingly raised him teaching various lessons, like "being humble in victory", as evidenced by one of his victory quotes in Shovel Knight Showdown, and tricks, like Reize's "Hedgespin" attack also seen in Showdown. Reize seems to remember and sincerely follow all of it.

The Baz[]

Whoa!
Are you for real, mister? Those spikes, the cool armor... Wow, is that a whip!? And you even got a belt with your name on it?! The Baz... I knew it! You must be a noble warrior!

— 'Reize', Shovel Knight Showdown

Reize first meets Baz during Showdown, while both were trapped inside the Mirror of Fate. Impressed by Baz's appearance and style, Reize begged him to take him as his student, which Baz accepted after a little pressuring, partially healing Baz's wounded pride after his recent rejection by the Order of No Quarter. Reize allegedly becomes Baz's student for training and battle techniques. At the end, Baz says that they need to fight each other to be able to escape and that he already taught him everything. In the PC and Xbox versions of Shovel of Hope, they meet again at the Mysterious Area, where Reize once again asks to be his student. During the ending of said campaign, they are seen together alongside other Wandering Travelers fighting Liquid Samurai.

Story[]

Shovel of Hope[]

In Shovel of Hope, Reize appears an optional encounter in which he mistakes Shovel Knight for an enemy and fights him. When defeated, he refuses to give in to fear and demands Shovel Knight strike him down. When Shovel Knight explains he is not a villainous knight, Reize becomes somewhat embarrassed and leaves Shovel Knight with some extra gold and, if he is the first Wandering Traveler to be beaten, the Music Sheet Fighting with All of Our Might.

In the Xbox One and PC versions, he can be found in the Mysterious Area in which he expresses an admiration of Baz and asks to be his student.

During the credits, Reize is seen working together with the other Wandering Travelers to fight some Liquid Samurais.

Plague of Shadows[]

In Plague of Shadows, Plague Knight can encounter Reize as an optional encounter, much like with Shovel Knight. Before the fight, Reize asks Plague Knight to make him a love potion in order to make a girl fall in love with him. Plague Knight refuses, however, and Reize says that if he loses a fight, he will have to tell the alchemist his funniest joke. After his defeat, Reize resign to woo his beloved the old-fashioned way and tells the joke, which makes Plague Knight laugh. He then runs off, leaving some extra gold behind.

During the credits, much like in Shovel of Hope, he can be seen with other Wandering Travelers, with the only difference being that Shovel Knight is now there too.

Specter of Torment[]

In Specter of Torment, Reize encounters Specter Knight after he has recruited three Order of No Quarter members. Reize invades the Tower of Fate from the Magic Mirror room in a reckless attempt to eradicate the evil lurking in the Tower, failing to recognize Donovan under his new undead guise. The Enchantress appears and notices Specter Knight attempting to conceal his concern for Reize. She shoots darkness at Reize, corrupting his personality into the vicious Dark Reize, who then fights Specter Knight to test his newfound powers. After the fight, the now corrupted Reize becomes the guard of the Magic Mirror.

After recruiting all of the knights and fighting Black Knight once again, Specter Knight fights The Enchantress. After defeating her, The Enchantress summons Dark Reize, transforming him into his "true form" as the final boss of the campaign. Specter Knight fights and manages to defeat him, but when The Enchantress attempts to take control of Reize once more in order to have him be the final member of the Order of No Quarter, Specter Knight prevents her from doing so, using his Keepsake Locket to turn Reize back to normal but relinquishing his own freedom in the process. Reize briefly recognizes Specter Knight as Donovan before passing out. Specter Knight then carries Reize to safety to the house of Hedge Farmer and Hedge Pupil in the Village[2] in the process shattering the physical form of the Magic Mirror. In the final flashback, it is revealed that Reize is the son of Specter Knight's former partner Luan.

Showdown[]

In Shovel Knight Showdown, Reize is one of the many characters trapped in the Mirror of Fate. In his story, he meets Baz, whom he quickly becomes the apprentice of. At the end, he has to fight Baz as his final test, but after breaking out of the mirror, he unfortunately finds himself still trapped in his own mind and he sees his friends and family, Hedge Farmer, Luan and Donovan, disappearing before him as he is still stuck as Dark Reize.

In Dark Reize's story, he attempts to destroy Reize, his good side, to please the Enchantress, with his good side constantly pleading to him to return to his senses. He fights him twice before escaping the mirror.

Pocket Dungeon[]

In the Puzzler's Pack DLC for Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon, Reize makes a small cameo appearance alongside the rest of his Hedge Family; At the Hedge Farm, inside the Hedge Farmer's burrow that can be entered with Mole Knight's dig ability, there is photo hanging on the wall, depicting a group shot of 'Edge Farmer, Hedge Farmer, Hedge Pupil, Ledge Farmer, Sledge Farmer, and finally Reize himself.

"Shovel Knight: I... I assure you, I have done no such--"
"Reize: You gonna use that shovel to

? Your reign of terror ends here!
"
After his fight "Reize: Do your worst, villain, strike me down!"
"Shovel Knight: I'm no villain! We're fighting a common enemy!"
"Reize: We... we are? Wh-why didn't you say so? Wow, I feel like a fool now."
"Shovel Knight: Think nothing of it, friend. Knights are strongest when they work together!"
"Reize: Yeah! Knight's Code, first vow: Always help a person in need! Knock 'em down, Shovel Knight!"
At the Mysterious Area "Reize: I already think you're the greatest, Baz! Will you be my teacher?"

Before his fight "Plague Knight: ..."
"Reize:
*gasp*
I thought I heard someone. Hey, you! With the bird mask! I know
alllll
about you... You're a legendary alchemist! I'm a hero too, I'll have you know. A hero in training, of course!
"
"Plague Knight: ..."
"Reize: You look like someone I can trust, so I'll let you in on a huge secret: I have a crush on a girl!"
"Plague Knight: ..."
"Reize: You know how to brew love potions, right? How about this! If I can beat you in a friendly sparring match...."
"Plague Knight: I don't have time to play around with you, kid!"
"Reize: Oh come on, ya big
stick in the mud!
If you win, I'll... tell you my funniest joke!
"
After his fight "Reize: Well, you beat me fair and square! Guess I'm gonna have to woo my beloved the
old-fashioned
way! Ah, win some, lose some. Well, whatever... it's
tellin' a joke time!
How many tickles does it take to make an octopus laugh? ... Ten tickles!
Gahahahaha!
Tee-hee!
"
"Plague Knight: Ten... Ten tickles......
Ten tickles!
Aaaaaahahahahahahaha!
Oh, how devious! Hee hee!
"
"Reize: Yeah!!!!! It's a Reize original. Just remember - knight's code, fifty-fifth vow: mirth makes worth!"

Fourth stage completed "Reize: Stop right there! Reize is here to save the day!"
"Specter Knight: ........ Reize?"
"Reize: The one and only! Uncle said there's evil stuff going on in here. And when evil's afoot, Reize is on the rise!"
"Specter Knight: Childish...You don't belong in this place... Run along, before you get hurt!"

[The Enchantress appears]

"The Enchantress: Who dares to intrude on my tower?"
"Reize: Hey lady! My name's Reize. Are you up here to help me beat these guys up?"
"The Enchantress: Oh..
Ho ho ho ho
. Looking for an apprentice of your own, Specter Knight?
"
"Specter Knight: He's nobody! Just a naive kid. Let him be... I'll escort him out myself."
"The Enchantress: A
nobody
, you say? Well that just won't do. Let's make something of him, shall we?
"
"Reize: What? What are you doing to me?! The darkness...
It hurts
!! Stop!
Arrrghhhhh!
"

[The Enchantress corrupts Reize]

"Reize: So.. potent... Ha ha ha!! Now
this
is the kind of feeling I could get used to! Put 'em up, skinny. Why don't we take my new powers for a spin?
"
Specter Knight used the Keepsake Locket on Dark Reize "The Enchantress:
Ha!
Reize has played his part well. With the power of the locket squandered on this whelp, your life is forfeit...
Now, you belong to me!
"
"Reize:
*cough*
...D-D-Donovan?
"
"The Enchantress: Henceforth and forever you will serve me in the Lich Yard! A fitting post, don't you think?
Ha ha ha!
"
"Specter Knight: ..."

Third fight in Dark Reize's story mode "Reize: Wow. Nice boomerang.
*gasp*
Say.... you look awfully familiar. Have we met before?
"
"Dark Reize: What!? Ah,
ha ha ha!
My mirror image ended up here too. What a total dork!
"
"Reize: M-Mirror image? I... guess? We both have a boomerang, and you're kinda tall. Hhey, do you know the Baz?"
"Dark Reize: Hah. My
good
side. Sheesh. The Enchantress will be pleased to hear that I've destroyed you.
"
"Reize: Hey, hold on, you can't just go destroying me! I'm Reize, and I fight for the forces of justice!"
Ninth fight in Dark Reize's story mode "Reize: Gotcha now, evil side! You better lay down your weapons and surrender peacefully. Enough fighting!"
"Dark Reize: Bah! Are you kidding me? I'm only getting warmed up. And you're about to get shut down!"
"Reize: Other me.. you're
soooo
not evil! I can feel it in my heart. You just wanna become good ol' classic Reize again!
"
"Dark Reize: ..Reize.. ha! A coward and a weakling. You're almost as lame as Specter Knight.
If darkness means that I never have to be
you
again, then I'll snuff out all light, everywhere, forever!
"
Victory speeches "Reize: I'm just a kid! How'd you manage to lose to me? Well, don't feel embarrassed, ok?"
"Reize: Uncle told me to be humble in victory, but it
sure is hard
after beating you up so badly!
"
"Reize: I'm getting better at tossin' my booms! That's short for boomerangs. Crystal Boomerangs, that is!"
"Reize: Ya' know, I don't always win every fight either. But I'll rematch you any time!"

Trivia[]

  • Reize appeared in other works since Sezui created him in 2001. His integration to the narrative of Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment is however entirely Yacht Club Games' work.[3]
    • He first appeared in another indie title called Valdis Story.
    • He made a cameo in the comic Hero Party.[4]
    • He makes a cameo in Indivisible, where he asks the party if they have seen Shovel Knight anywhere.
    • He also makes a cameo in another indie game titled CrossCode.[5]
  • Reize's last name "Seatlan" was only mentioned when his character was first introduced to Shovel Knight on the game's Kickstarter.
  • Reize seemingly has poor judgement or bad luck with information; he mistakes Shovel Knight for a villain and, contrarily, Plague Knight for a hero. This causes him some trouble in Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment, when he breaks into the Tower of Fate and mistakes the Enchantress for an ally when she appears, getting corrupted against his will as a result.
    • When Reize first meets Shovel Knight, he mentions hearing of a villainous 'knight with a shovel'. It's possible that he mistook Shovel Knight for Black Knight, who is very similar, but less lawful. He also may have mistaken him Polar Knight, one of the knights of the Order of No Quarter who also wields a shovel.
  • Reize has an altered portrait for the Japanese version of the game.
  • The developers designed a Body Swap version for Reize, although only the main cast of Shovel Knight: Shovel of Hope had one added to the campaign.
  • Reize is the only Wandering Traveler who is not physically present in all of the campaigns of Treasure Trove. Specifically, he is absent in King of Cards, though he has his own Joustus card.
  • Reize is pronounced like reez.[6]
