Story[]

Shovel Knight is peacefully sleeping at his modest campfire after acquiring a significant amount of treasures and loot, when suddenly, he is ambushed by a giant drilling machine, the Rocket Drill, piloted by Drill Knight, who immediately steals the bag full of treasures for himself. Following the thief into the hole he left behind, Shovel Knight discovers that it is connected to The Well, a massive pit that extends far, far down into the depths of the Valley's crust, that Drill Knight and his cohorts -The Hexcavators- had created for some sort of nefarious reason. It quickly became clear that the theft of the bag of loot was not a simple happenstance, as Shovel Knight discovers that it contained one of the Stones of Fate, gems tainted with dark magic. Together with his partner Shield Knight, he begins trying to tracking it down with renovated fervor.

As Shovel Knight presses down into The Well, due to the Gemstones' dark magic influence, he repeatedly encounters apparitions of his bag, while a crystal ball presses him to reach "The Burrow". When the heroes reach Drill Knight's Castle, Shield Knight is separated from Shovel Knight while holding back one of the villain's traps. Shovel Knight presses onward and encounters Drill Knight in a vault of treasure, an otherwise unreachable part of the Tower of Fate, which had buried itself under the Well due to the Stones of Fate influence, which it has been the thieving knight's goal to gain access to. The two knights duel, with the blue hero emerging victorious and reclaiming his bag of loot. Shovel Knight and Shield Knight ride Drill Knight's own Rocket Drill back to the surface as the shaft collapses, where they are lauded by the denizens of the valley for defeating the Hexcavators. However, this is not the true ending.

By sending Shield Knight's pet owl Altius down The Well, Shovel Knight may embark on a lengthy quest to obtain all of the dark Gemstones. Along the route, he gains access to a vault where a legendary relic called the Omega Driver is kept. Now, in his duel with Drill Knight, Shovel Knight dismantles the yellow knight's Omega Saw with the Omega Driver during their fight. The blade malfunctions and cracks the floor, revealing a lock opened by the dark gems, which Drill Knight realizes is the way to the real treasure. Shovel Knight pursues the Hexcavators through the Crystal Core to an even more secluded chamber, that turns out to be the chamber which houses the Amulet, the prison of The Enchantress, a malevolent spirit of old. The villain escapes the amulet, captures the Hexcavators, and transforms Drill Knight into a magical behemoth. But, with help from Shield Knight and Altius, the cerulean crusader vanquishes the monster and traps The Enchantress within the amulet once again. The Well begins to cave in as the Tower of Fate rises back to the surface, and the heroes escape via the Rocket Drill, resolving to soon return to the tower and collect the amulet before it possesses some other unfortunate soul.

In the game's final scene, Shovel Knight finally retrieves the crystal ball from his bag- a magical Drifting Glass, with which he wanted to show Shield Knight their old den, The Burrow. The two settle down in The Burrow to rest before embarking on their journey to retrieve the amulet, leading into the events immediately preceding Shovel of Hope.

The third ending variation is very similar to the normal one, achieved by not finding all Gemstones, but still disabling the Omega Saw during Drill Knight's boss fight. Due to this, the lock of the secret passage for the Crystal Core malfunctions and breaks down, which infuriates Drill Knight so much that he starts trying to destroy the lock himself, while Shovel Knight and Shield Knight escape from the collapsing Well with the Rocket Drill.
