My gems... My vessel... My ocean. Your very presence tarnishes.

Treasure Knight, Shovel Knight: Shovel of Hope

Treasure Knight is one of eight Knights of the Order of No Quarter who serves the Enchantress as well as a ill-famed pirate. He is the boss of the Iron Whale, his personal submarine.

Official Bio[]

Towering over most of the Order of No Quarter, Treasure Knight is a tidal terror. A loner by nature, he rules the ocean as captain of the Iron Whale, a prototype underwater vessel. With his retractable anchor cannon and impermeable diving suit, he is at home on the seafloor, where he spends his days hunting down ancient relics. Just keep your hands off his hard-earned lucre... or you’ll find yourself floating home!
  • Pros: Can handle extreme physical and mental pressure
  • Cons: Greedy, unintelligible while wearing helmet

Dig the Vote pitch[]

Tone[]

Treasure Knight is greedy, so his campaign will be about coming to the surface in search of treasure, where he is drawn into the conflict. Expect him to explain the reasons for his self-imposed exile.

Original Play Style Ideas[]

  • Grappling Anchor – Fire anchor upwards or horizontally and reel yourself in. Jump to break free while retaining your reeling momentum.
  • Water Flush – Pour water out of your suit to push enemies away.
  • Game of Greed – Money is important to Treasure Knight, and so he will declare a game over if he hits rock bottom.
  • Gem Shot – Shoot projectiles at the cost of money.

Treasure Knight ended up taking the last place of the Dig the Vote selection, placing as 10th, with an average score of 4.52.

Personality[]

He is the greediest of the Order hence the name "Treasure Knight" should anyone say that there are things more valuable than gold he will fly into a murderous rage, he spends most of his time hunting for treasure and attacks anyone willing to take it. Despite his greediness, he is fair when it comes to payday. He is also very smart on how to claim his domain when it came to the Teethalon. He can be a little skeptical when it comes to him getting paid and his investment secure.

Relationships[]

Mole Knight[]

Heh. You, of all people, should understand the value of timeliness.
The gems, now!

— 'Treasure Knight', Shovel Knight Showdown

Mole Knight and Treasure Knight have a mutual respect for each other. After the events of Shovel Knight Showdown, the two make a deal where Mole Knight would remain in land and Treasure Knight would stay, submerged beneath the waves, not interfering in each other's business to avoid conflict.

Propeller Knight[]

How about we both wager our takings here on who can grab more of the lucre surrounding us? Winner takes all.

— 'Treasure Knight', Shovel Knight Showdown

Treasure Knight and Propeller Knight have a mutual respect for each other, being both treasure hunters who seem to value their word. At the end of Shovel Knight Showdown, Treasure Knight is very surprised with the fact Propeller Knight actually honored the end of his bargain and paid in full what they had bet. Even after seeing the money being deposited into his submarine's hatch, the bounty hunter was still wary as "no one was to be trusted," not resting until "he'd counted every last coin."

Story[]

Before Treasure Trove, Treasure Knight stated sailing under the nearby sea boarding the Troupple Kingdom with his crew aboard the Iron Whale, the knight's own submarine. This opportunist was only interested in increasing his own wealth by salvaging any sunken valuables he could find. His activity disturbed the local fauna and the fishermen living from it. His obsession led him to want to lay claim to the sea itself by capturing the terror haunting its depths, the Teethalon.

In King of Cards, King Knight inadvertently hangs onto Treasure Knight's fishing anchor at the end of Treasure Knight's Loot and is hauled up into the Iron Whale's vault. The treasure hunter is first angered that the gilded dandy scared his prey, the terrible Teethalon, away with his flashy getup and intends on making due by stripping the royal pretender of his wealth and throwing him overboard.

After Treasure Knight loses the fight, he travels aboard the Glidewing. There, he plays a few games of Joustus to distract himself from his anxieties of being airborne.

In the ending, Treasure Knight corners Teethalon with a Gulper Mage at the bottom of the marine trench. After destroying its antenna protection with Throwing Anchors, he traps its antenna with a blue Treasure Chest and proceeds to bury the depths' predator under the sea floor, leaving only the Treasure Chest visible. With this victory, the treasure hunter ascertains his dominance over the sea itself.

In Specter of Torment, Treasure Knight had just brought up the Iron Whale to the surface when Specter Knight hopped aboard. First displeased by the presence of this stowaway, the treasure hunter listens to the apparition's proposition: unrestricted salvage rights and the position of financier for the Enchantress. Yet, Treasure Knight wants proof that his efforts and resources will bring him interest, and so Specter Knight proceeds to fight him to demonstrate the powers the Enchantress can grant to her followers.

After his defeat, Treasure Knight shows up at the dining hall of the Tower of Fate. The treasure hunter is however quite disappointed by the state of the place, which he judges only fit for renovation.

In the ending, Treasure Knight started his work as financier of the Order of No Quarter. The Order's minions and other lackeys line up inside the Iron Whale's treasure vault, where the knight gives them their meager salary. He later bows down to the Enchantress in her throne room at the Tower of Fate along with the rest of the newly-formed Order of No Quarter.

Shortly before Specter Knight's confrontation with the Enchantress in Specter of Torment, Treasure Knight was abducted from his submarine by the Mirror of Fate wreaking havoc. He awakes in the Colosseum and tries to figure how he ended away from his precious ship. As foes appear before him, the villainous knight prepares to battle for his own life.

As he reaches the Treasure Vault, Treasure Knight encounters Propeller Knight, his fellow captain within the Order of No Quarter, stranded on land like him. They wager on the cause behind their predicament, until the seabound captain proposes a more lucrative game: they shall compete for wealth in this twisted world. Whoever wins the most also wins the other's share. On this agreement, they team up for the next fight. They meet again before the Mirror Chamber but find themselves at a tie, having both won 8 fights during their competition. Treasure Knight proposes a duel to end it, and the sky pirate gladly accepts in good sport. After defeating his colleague, Treasure Knight shatters the Mirror of Fate and escapes to the real world. Back on his Iron Whale at last, the treasure hunter waits for Propeller Knight to honor his bet. And so the flying captain does, delivering from his Flying Machine a bounty of 75000 treasures. Satisfied, Treasure Knight sails back under the sea, but reminds himself to count every coin of his new gains, as he can trust no one.

While still trapped, the marine plunderer encounters his fellow treasure hunter from the Order, Mole Knight, in the Goo Gorge. The digger proposes to team up, but Treasure Knight wants a return to interest on his investment. Mole Knight assures him that there will be plenty to loot from others during their cooperation, and so they team up for the next fight. This partnership only lasted until the end of their adventure: reaching before the Mirror Chamber, they both decide to betray each other to claim all the accumulated wealth for themselves. After a fight, the seabound treasure hunter loses to his landbound rival. Back in the real world, both treasure hunters make peace, vowing to not step on each other's hunting grounds for the near future.

In Shovel of Hope, Shovel Knight reaches to Treasure Knight in the Iron Whale's treasure vault. The villainous treasure hunter is much displeased by this intruder and his accusations. Treasure Knight points that the Blue Borrower is as much sinful as him and proposes a duel with their respective bounty as stake.

After his defeat, the seabound knight face Shovel Knight again at the dining hall of the Tower of Fate, surrounded by the rest of his villainous colleagues. This unexpected intrusion amuses him. He then joins the rest of the Order of No Quarter into a Battle Royale against their foe and ends up hanging over a pit. If the adventurer saves him, an unexpectedly sympathetic Treasure Knight warns Shovel Knight of the emotional challenge he will soon face, and wishes him luck.

In the ending, after the end of the Order of No Quarter, Treasure Knight is devastated by the loss of his precious but ill-gained treasure haul, reclaimed from the Iron Whale by the Valley's inhabitants. One of his complainants, Skip, takes pity and tosses him a single gold coin, but the defeated treasure hunter won't even look at it.

In Plague of Shadows, Treasure Knight is surprised to see Plague Knight showing up in the Iron Whale's treasure vault, and first believes that either the alchemist or the Order itself are in need of more finances. The rogue knight mocks him by claiming he is looking for something more valuable than gold, which baffles the greedy knight who intends of throwing Plague Knight out. Plague Knight wins the fight and extracts Treasure Knight's Essence.

Later on at the Tower's dining hall, Plague Knight unknowingly drops down in the middle of his former colleagues' banquet. Treasure Knight reminds the alchemist that he is late on his membership's dues and that he must pay now. After Shovel Knight drops down as well but passes out from the fall, the treasure hunter joins his indignant colleague into a Battle Royale against the rogue alchemist. He is eventually defeated once again by Plague Knight and left to hang over a pit by an uncaring Shovel Knight, while the alchemist makes his escape.

In the ending, after the fall of the Order, Plague Knight, Mona and their Plague Minions take away all the wealth Treasure Knight accumulated in his submarine's vault. To add insult to injury, the alchemist tosses the devastated treasure hunter a live Bait Bomb, much to his surprise.

In Pocket Dungeon, Treasure Knight is one of the many knights who were trapped inside the titular artifact. His presence inside the puzzle box shaped its landscapes, adding a carbon copy of his Iron Whale to the dungeon. He can be randomly encountered as a boss fight and recruited to Puzzle Knight's campsite.

Strategy[]

Treasure Knight employs a high mobility fighting style, using his retractable anchor to deal damage and move around the arena at high speeds. He also relies on caltrops thrown into the arena to provide area denial and control.

Techniques:[]

  • Horizontal Grapple Anchor
    • Treasure Knight aims his cannon arm toward a wall for a split second before firing his anchor toward it. After a small delay he will either retract the anchor or pull himself toward the wall. This is particularly deadly as the anchor projectile AND his subsequent dash will both cause damage on impact.
  • Vertical Grapple Anchor
    • Similarly to the horizontal grapple Treasure Knight will aim his cannon arm toward the ceiling. After a short delay, he will rise up toward the ceiling. This differs from the horizontal grapple in that it's the trigger for some of Treasure Knight's other abilities to become ready.
  • Grapple Slam
    • Whilst floating high Treasure Knight will aim his cannon arm toward the ground and fire the anchor. He fires it very quickly and as such it causes the golden coins to blast from the floor. Whilst in the "air" he will do this attack twice, placing himself above his target using Horizontal Grapples. Afterward he will grapple to the floor again.
  • Ground Slam
    • Treasure Knight readies his fist and punches the ground, causing a large golden coin ripple to travel from one end of the arena to the other. Caution should be taken, standing close to Treasure Knight can cause damage to be taken from the punch and then the displacement from the punch will cause the incoming wave to catch you as you exit invulnerability.
  • Caltrops
    • Treasure Knight throws floating caltrops into the arena. After a short delay he will cause them to pop dealing damage in a small area of effect.
  • Suction Chest
    • Treasure Knight throws a chest into the middle of the arena which acts as a vacuum, suctioning Shovel Knight toward it. Shortly after the chest activates Treasure Knight will toss Caltrops into the arena, the suction from the chest will cause them to swirl around the area becoming somewhat unpredictable damage sources. Once trapped in the chest, his target will lose 500 gold and lose four points of health once hit by Treasure Knight's horizontal grapple anchor.

Pocket Dungeon[]

As a playable knight, Treasure Knight's default ability lets him have an increased attack power when he attacks units from below.

His Refract Ability, Grapple Anchor lets him instead shoot his Anchor cannon in one of the four directions, letting him either hook entire rows and columns of units towards him, thusly shifting the layout of the dungeon and make it easier to set up chains, or anchor himself towards the edges of the dungeon, or particularly tough foes like bosses and Major Enemies. This second option makes him able to quickly move around the dungeon to avoid damage, or chase around adversaries that are particularly slippery. However, for the ability to work, Treasure Knight must be at least one space away from his target, otherwise he'll not be able to do either motion.

Treasure Trove[]

Before his fight "Treasure Knight: My gems... my vessel... my ocean. Your very presence tarnishes."
"Shovel Knight: You are to lay claim to the sea itself? Your greed knows no bounds, Treasure Knight."
"Treasure Knight: Your hands are no less dirty. Even now, others are paying for your avarice.
Let us duel. Winner take all...
"

Before his fight "Treasure Knight: What's the matter, Plague Knight, alchemy business slowing down? Here to make some coin? Or are the Order's coffers running dry? Can't you just synthesize all the fool's gold you want?"
"Plague Knight: Ha! Good guess! But no, it's something
far
more important than mere gold.
"
"Treasure Knight: !!!
More important than gold?
Now you're just being ridiculous. Get out of here you bottom-feeder!
"
"Plague Knight:
Ooooooooh
, your Essence is showing,
hee? ?hee? ?hee!
I hope you don't mind if I help myself!
"

Before his fight "Treasure Knight:
*sigh*
I just brought my ship to the surface...and already I find a beggar on board.
"
"Specter Knight: I'm not here for a hand out. Instead I bring a proposition...unrestricted salvage rights and a place as the Enchantress' financier."
"Treasure Knight: Oh, I'll
gladly
spend gold to make gold. But how can I take your word that my investment would be secure?
"
"Specter Knight: Our deals go far beyond words. Behold a glimpse of the power she commands!"
Talked to at the Tower's dining hall "Treasure Knight: I was told there was a banquet hall. This? This is a travesty. The only thing fit to order here... is a complete renovation."

Before his fight "Treasure Knight:
Curses!
That fish had drawn near! I waited for hours! You scared it away, with that gilded getup!
"
"King Knight: Gilded indeed, workman! Have you no respect for your betters? You've found royalty!"
"Treasure Knight: I respect only one thing, and that's wealth... but you appear to be
wearing
most of yours!
"
"King Knight:
Thank you!
The trick with gold polish, you see, is small clockwise circles, with a soft brush.
"
"Treasure Knight: I'll bear that in mind as I toss it in the vault. And you overboard, with the other worthless trash!"
Talked to aboard the Glidewing "Treasure Knight: As if this...
"ship"
would be seaworthy. Dry lungs, indeed! Sailing the skies... what folly!
Perhaps playing Joustus will distract from the poor atmosphere.
"

Third fight in Mole Knight's story mode "Mole Knight: Ah, marine logistics showed up. You know how to excavate, right?"
"Treasure Knight: Certainly, for the right bidder. But I'm afraid in our current situation, the economy has changed."
"Mole Knight: Well, there are still people to fleece, and plunder to pilfer! Why not team up, while we're here?"
"Treasure Knight: Heh! That plan puts the wind in my sails. Heave to, then!"
Ninth fight in Mole Knight's story mode "Mole Knight: Treasure Knight! There you are again! Have you had a successful scavenger hunt?"
"Treasure Knight: Oh, indeed I have. The Iron Whale shall require a ballast adjustment.
Especially since I'll be carrying all of
your
treasure as well. Now, be a chum and
hand it over
."
"Mole Knight:
But... You can't betray me! I was literally
seconds
away from betraying
you!
"
"Treasure Knight:
Heh. You, of all people, should understand the value of timeliness.
The gems, now!
"
Victory speeches "Treasure Knight: You're little more than deadweight to be jettisoned."
"Treasure Knight:
Now
is when you hand over your valuables. I'll be taking them back to the Iron Whale.
"
"Treasure Knight: Oh, look at that. There's a scratch on my anchor. I'll send you a bill for the repair."
"Treasure Knight: A poor showing! Clearly, you lack professionalism. This is why I work alone."

Spin-offs[]

Random lines before his fight "Treasure Knight: Hm, your valuables will fetch a nice price, once I'm out of here. Hand them over...
Now.
"
"Treasure Knight: The Pocket Dungeon is as vast as the ocean. There's no hope for you to reach the surface."
"Treasure Knight: My escape is at hand... but not yours. You'll sink to the bottom."
First time talked to at the camp "Treasure Knight: I’d wager someone in our ranks is responsible for us being trapped..."
Talked to again at the camp "Treasure Knight: I have a sinking feeling about this place... but I'll chart us a course, if there are valuables to be had."

Random lines before his fight "Treasure Knight: These intricate contraptions must be guarding something valuable... perhaps the treasure vault?"

Trivia[]

  • Treasure Knight was enlisted as the the Order of No Quarter's financial manager. He can be seen at the end of Specter of Torment distributing the salary for various minions. Accountant visor included.
    • In the challenges "Dirt Clod Dash", for Specter of Torment, and "Dirt Clod Bash", unlocked with the King Knight amiibo, you can find Treasure Knight taking care of the Order's finances if you, respectively, go right or left at the beginning.
  • He is the only knight who willingly agreed on being a member of the Order of No Quarter in Specter of Torment. Specter Knight only fought against him to show the power the Enchantress could give to him.
