Hello, I figured we could have a blog post to discuss what can or needs to be changed in the wiki. That way it'll be easier to participate rather than through message walls. We can use the comments to discuss each proposition, which I'll use to update the main post.

I'll start with a few suggestions right off the bat and tty to detail or provide examples

Main Suggestions

That dragon, Categories

The most ancient and avoided issue on wikis, Categories. How do we organize them, what do we want to highlight through them? I'll also state that if we don't give a clear decision on how to handle categories, Editors (random or locals) will keep adding them without coherence.

Currently, the category tree ressembles this:

  • Browse‎ (4 C, 1 P)
    • Content‎ (9 C, 1 P)
      • Characters‎ (14 C, 101 P)
        • Antagonists‎ (1 C, 10 P)
        • Bosses‎ (5 C, 30 P)

        • Guest Characters‎ (3 P)
        • Hexcavators‎ (3 P)
        • Knights‎ (2 C, 22 P)
        • Merchants‎ (15 P)
        • NPC‎ (101 P)
        • The Order of no Quarter‎ (9 P)

The most common design is to highlight in which media [X] character or [Y] item appears. Here however, sub-categories related to games are currently kept separate from the Content categories (Characters, Game Mechanics, Enemies, etc...). The Characters category is bursting of sub-categories which, if we rename them with game titles, would make the bottom of pages a long, boring list ("Shovel of Hope Mini-game NPC", "Plague of Shadows Merchant", "Specter of Torment Cameo Characters", "Showdown Playable Character", and so on... for Mona alone).

Should we continue to keep the game categories separate? Should we rename categories but get rid of some that feel unecessary (mainly all the Groups like Team Plague, Order of No Quarter, Three Kings, etc...)?

NinjaFatGuy is in favor of highlighting game names in categories. I agree although I also want to get rid of the excess of categories under Characters, Groups and Enemies.

With the new style of infoboxes being used for Characters/Bosses pages, should we adapt it to other infoboxes currently being used for Stages, Games and Feats?

Also, should we have infoboxes on Enemies pages? I can crop the .GIF to fit the width of the infobox.

NinjaFatGuy and Lampy8766 are in favor of adapting the Characters infobox to enemies. NinjaFatGuy Also wants to unify the infobox style throughout the wiki.

List Pages

With how many Characters and Enemies pages we have on this Wiki, I think we can spruce up a bit the category pages to feature a list with icons. Something like that would in my opinion ease browsing between NPCs and Enemies more than any navbox could.

NinjaFatGuy likes the idea of illustrated lists. I'll be proposing a mock-up with the complete set of pixel portraits from King of Cards.

Stage pages

In Treasure Trove only, we have a lot of redundancy in stage names. Shovel of Hope, Plague of Shadows and Specter of Torment each have their own variations of the series' thematic stages. I'd argue for example that the Lich Yard in SoH and PoS are basically the same map save for a bonus section. However the Lich Yard in SoT is quite different in geometry, enemies and obstacles. Moreover, now the Armor Outpost can both refer to the hub stage from SoH and PoS, but also an arena in Showdown. The same is true for the Potionarium...

Should we start making seperate pages for levels based on their games to mark the differences? I'd argue we could aldo make location subcategories based on the stage's themes (Plains, Village, Pridemoor). The Showdown arenas and King of Cards stages seem to be presented that way now.

Page themes

It is possible to customise the style of wiki pages to display different background images, text colors and such. For example, two styles of pages from the Hollow Knight wiki:

I can propose to make page themes specific to games, NPCs or bosses, etc...

NinjaFatGuy remarks that the current theme is good enough for all pages.

Music Player

With the soundtrack of Shovel Knight being (legally) hosted on Bandcamp, it is possible to enable embedded players on wiki pages. For example.

I'll be looking into it later.
